The subject aims to introduce students to basic and essential issues related to phonetics and phonology of Spanish. These issues relate mainly to the Castilian variant, however, in general terms, reference is also made to other varieties of Spanish. |

The aim of the classes is to transfer knowledge in phonetics and phonology, with special focus on the phonetics and phonology of Spanish. Students will learn the phonetic and phonological description of the standard variant pronunciation (Castilian), as well as learn about the major differences between it and other variants. Besides, they get to know stress rules and main intonation patterns. Students acquire knowledge useful when you use the language: knowledge of correct pronunciation, accent and intonation, ability of syllabic division and interword junction, knowledge of the correct spelling. Student's workload: Participation in classes = 30 hours Prepare oneself for classes = 10 hours Preparation for the exam = 10 hours Altogether = 50 hours |

Learning outcomes: |
After completion of the classes, student: KNOWLEDGE: 1. Can define the range of studies of phonetics and phonology. 2. Knows and understands basic terms used in phonetics and phonology. 3. Can describe Spanish phonemes and their allophones. 4. Has acquired knowledge of the basic patterns of intonation in Spanish. 5. Has got basic knowledge of Spanish dialects in the Iberian Peninsula. SKILLS: 1. Can explain the pronunciation of each word in Spanish (according to the standard Castilian). 2. Can explain causes and nature of the phonetic phenomena occurring in the stream of speech in Spanish. 3. Makes in an appropriate manner the syllabic division of words in Spanish, in accordance with the rules. |
