ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The course introduces selected topics in the field of phonetics and phonology, with focus on the Swedish language. The classes are mainly theoretical, but also include practical exercises.

Full description:

he lectures introduce selected topics in the field of phonetics and phonology, with focus on the Swedish language. More specific topics include:

• introduction to phonetics as a linguistic discipline

• the phonological system of the Swedish language

• relationship between spelling and pronunciation

• historical development of Swedish speech sounds

• organs of speech and Polish and Swedish terminology

• vowels and consonants and their description and function in words

• syllable, accent

• prosody and intonation

• phonetic transcription

• computer software as a tool for speech analysis

If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.

Learning outcomes:

The learning outcomes for the students are that they:

• attain general knowledge in the field of phonetics and phonology.

• get to apply theoretical knowledge to analyze texts and daily speech.

• get to apply phonetical terminology to describe words.

• gain awareness of the need to develop and improve pronunciation,

especially the prosodic aspects of speech.

• gain the ability to use digital tools to analyze speech.

Methods and criteria for assessing the student's work:

- continuous assessment (being prepared for classes and carrying out tasks

during classes): 20%

- mid-term test: 20%

- homework, e.g. digital speech analysis: 20%

- final written test: 40%
