ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Knowledge of the development of German language from the Middle Age to today, acquisition of knowledge in language diachrony

Full description:

Theoretical issues

1) The concept of history of language, periodization of the German language, Indo-European languages.

2) The Indo-European language: its characteristics and divisions (the kentum languages and SATEM).

3) Characteristics of Prtogermanic language

4) Germans and Germanic languages (groups and peculiarities of their development). Classification and periodization

5) Language of the Old High German and its characteristics (phonetics, morphology, vocabulary).

6) The second consonants shift and dialects of the German language.

7) Language Texts Old High German, and their geographic diversity.

8) The development of language in the period 900-1100. Features of the transition from the Old High German to Middle High German.

9) Language Medium / High German and its characteristics (phonetics, morphology, vocabulary), medieval German texts (Song of the Nibelungs 1200).

10) The German language from the Middle Ages to the present.

11) Stages of development of the standard German language dialects - Special languages - supra-regional variety of Germanism (period 1350-1650), a struggle between two main varieties of the German language - the language and the Upper German Meissen for primacy, the victory of German standard mid-18th century, the language and the formation of a standard orthographic and phonetic German in 19/20. century

12) The variety of the German language at the moment: dialects, regional variations colloquial (everyday), variants of the standard language German-speaking countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein. German language and its importance in the world at the moment.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, the student:

- knows and understands basic methods of analysis and interpretation of various cultural products characteristic of selected traditions, theories or research schools, in applied linguistics (including glottodidactics and translation) and literature studies and/or culture (K_W07, H1A_W07)

- Is aware of the complex nature of language and its complexity and historical variability (K_W09, H1A_W09)

- is able to recognize characteristic cultural elements and properly interpret social and historical changes in relation to the realities of a given language area (K_U05, H1A_U05).

- has language skills in a second foreign language as required by level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K_U10, H1A_U10)

- is aware that actions undertaken in various inter-lingual communication systems should serve to preserve the cultural heritage of a given region, country and the whole Europe (K_K05, H1A_K05)

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment methods:

● continuous assessment for active participation in classes (20%)

● homeworks, final presentation or/and final written exam (80%),

Assessment criteria for the final test:

55%-69% = 3; 70%-74% = 3,5; 75%-84% = 4; 85%-89% = 4+;

90%-100% = 5

If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.

If remote lessons need to be taught, the mode of instruction, methods and criteria for assessment may change.
