The student should know Russian at least B2.

The subject of the course is the history of the Russian language against the background of the history of Indo-European and Slavonic languages.

The course is addressed to students of linguistics who work with Russian-language specialist texts.

The aim of the course is:

• to familiarize students with various historical processes that have influenced the contemporary Russian language,

• to acquaint students with the basic features of the Old Church Slavonic language and its role in the history of the Russian language.

The course is designed to prepare students to independently analyze historical processes that have influenced the shape of lexemes and their forms in contemporary Russian language and caused differences between this language and other Slavic languages.

The program of the course covers phonetic and morphological issues. Among the first issues, the processes of shaping the vowel and consonant system of the contemporary Russian language are discussed. Among the latter issues, the processes of shaping contemporary parts of speech and their morphological categories are discussed. The course places special emphasis on the processes that led to the emergence of contemporary regular morphological alternations and irregular forms.

The classes also develop the ability to recognize Church Slavonic forms and find their Russian equivalents. In addition, the course emphasizes the diversity of linguistic influences and the need to deepen knowledge independently with the use of modern and classic sources.

Student workload:

30 hours attendance = 1 ECTS

60 h independent student work = 2 ECTS:

• 50 hours of ongoing preparation for classes (reading and analyzing of texts),

• 10 hours preparation to pass.

In the event of inability to conduct the traditional in-class lessons, the course’s contact hours will be conducted remotely with the use of the devices recommended by the University of Warsaw.

After completing the course, the student:

• is aware of the complex nature of the language, its complexity and historical variability (K_W09),

• knows the origin of the Russian language (S_W08),

• knows the distinctive features of the Russian language in comparison with other East Slavic languages, with the Old Church Slavonic language and the Polish language (S_W08),

• knows the origin of individual sounds, individual parts of speech and individual grammatical categories in Russian (S_W08),

• has knowledge about sources of information (dictionaries, electronic dictionaries, etc.) concerning the history of the Russian language (S_W01),

• is able to use theoretical knowledge and sources of information to analyze individual lexemes and grammatical forms (S_U02),

• is prepared to independently deepen and update its knowledge and skills in the field of historical analysis (S_K08)

The final grade is based on the final written test (100%) in the form of an open test.

• over 90% - 5

• 80% -89% - 4+

• 70% -79% - 4

• 60% -69% - 3+

• 50% -59% - 3

Principles of cooperation with the students:
