  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Prerequisites (description):

The student should be able to operate the computer to a degree that will allow them to learn to operate new software and have fundamental knowledge in the areas of translation studies and terminology.

Short description:

The aim of the course is to familiarise the students with the practical use of CAT tools so that they acquire and develop their skills in creating and managing terminological databases.

The course content will concern among others the following subject areas:

  • characteristics of the process of computer-assisted translation
  • typology of CAT and terminological tools
  • principles of creating terminological databases for the purposes of a translation project
  • creating terminological databases on the basis of translation projects with the use of term extraction functionalities, parallel text corpora and non-commercial tools
  • managing terminological databases as parts of a translation project
  • practical aspects of sharing translation resources
  • online resources for translatos and the methods of their verification
  • Full description:

    The objective of the course is to familiarise the students with the process of computer-assisted translation and to develop competences needed by translators and terminologists who cooperate with institutions which manage their own terminologies.

    In the course of the classes, the instructor will:

  • present various types of terminological databases and typical translation memories as well as universally available bilingual corpora,
  • describe the principles of operation of typical CAT tools,
  • show how to use independent terminological databases and create and manage terminology in databases embedded in CAT tools,
  • discuss the principles of using and the effectiveness of machine translation,
  • show how to use memoQ software (filling in and confirming segments, using translation memory suggestions, using concordance, adding files to the project, using the statistics, aligning files, performing quality assurance and cooperating with other project participants),
  • present the principles of cooperation with a translation agency.
  • Theoretical presentations will be supplemented with extensive demonstrations of the discussed software, functionalities and operations in the form of PowerPoint presentations and direct demonstrations of the software with the use of a laptop and an overhead projector. Moreover, the students will develop their skills by performing tasks in the software themselves.
