  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Prerequisites (description):

The course covers the following topics:


1. introduction: a summary and reminder of the theoretical knowledge of consecutive interpreting acquired in module TKO1 and TKO2


2. consecutive interpreting with note-taking, texts lasting between 3 and 6 minutes, at varying speeds


3. development of skills in note-taking techniques in consecutive interpreting: notation of text structure and content, exercises on texts of 3 to 6 minutes in length at different speeds


4. identification of problems and errors in note-taking; notation in texts with a lot of information


5. alternative modes of consecutive interpreting: liaison/ad hoc, sim-consec.


6. simulation of a consecutive interpreting assignment in dialogic consecutive interpreting mode, with dynamic change of interpreting direction (into language A and B)


7. introduction to the use of portable interpretation kits (infoports, PIEs) in consecutive and mixed modes


8. ethics in the work of the interpreter


9. quality assurance in the work of the interpreter

Short description:

The course aims to develop knowledge and skills in consecutive interpreting. Students practise interpreting longer texts and note-taking techniques, including with fast-paced, information-dense texts. They become more familiar with the characteristics of the profession and gain the ability to self-correct and objectively assess the quality of others' interpretations. They learn about and practise accompanying interpreting and dialogue interpreting with dynamic changes.

Full description:

The course aims to develop previously acquired consecutive interpreting skills. The core of the class consists of workshop exercises in interpreting texts of various lengths, initially between 3 and 5 minutes in length and by the end of the semester - up to 5-6 minutes in length. Students develop their note-taking techniques and learn to detect errors, in note-taking also in texts with a lot of information and abstract vocabulary. At the same time, the teacher presents practical information on the profession of consecutive interpreting and the ethics of interpreting - this component is spread over the whole semester and builds on previously acquired knowledge. In addition to consecutive interpreting in the 'traditional' mode, students learn about and practise accompanying consecutive interpreting in liaison/ad hoc mode and in dialogue mode with dynamic changes of direction. During the course, students not only work on improving their interpreting skills, but also expand their general knowledge and language skills (native and foreign) through the texts used. At this stage, more specialised texts are used which require lexical preparation and are more challenging for students, and students are introduced to portable equipment which can facilitate consecutive and mixed mode assignments (infoports, portable interpreting devices - PIEs).

Student workload:

30 contact hours;

25 hours class preparation;

5 hours preparation for the credit.

Total approx. 60 hours = 2 ECTS.

If it is not possible to conduct classes on-site, classes will be held using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet, ZOOM and other recommended by UW.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course the student:

- can translate consecutively (with note-taking) a text on general topics and given at different speeds (approx. 6 min)

- can translate consecutively (with note-taking) a text on a semi-specialist subject (up to 6 min.)

- is able to interpret consecutively in accompanying and dialogue mode

- is familiar with the full characteristics of the job of consecutive interpreting

- is able to evaluate consecutive interpreting and describe possible errors

- has knowledge on the ethics of the interpreting profession

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Requirements:

- attendance in class (two absences allowed)

- active participation in classes

- successful translation of the test text(s)
