Introduction of the main currents and schools of Russian art of the X-XX centuries with a special emphasis on their originality and novelty and their European context

Full description:

1. Peroidisation of Old-Russian art. Significant examples of church architecture (frescoes, mosaics, ikonostas). The origin and main features of icon-painting. 2. The great masters of icon-painting (Theofanes the Greek, Andrei Rublov, Dionisii). New tendencies in icon-painting ot the 17th century (Simon Ushakov). Parsunas. 3. The 18th century - secularisation and democratisation of art. The importance of reforms of Peter the Great for the development of art. Classicism in Russian painting. The 18th century - the age of a portrait (I. Nikitin, A. Matveev, F. Rokotov, D. Levitzky, V. Borovikovky etc.). 4. History painting (A. Losenko). The birth of ladscape painting (Semyon Shchedrin, F. Alekseev). 5. Painting in first half of the 19th century. Romantic portrait (O. Kiprensky). Landscape painting (Silvestr Shchedrin) and genre painting (A. Venetsyanov and his school). 6. The life and works of K. Bryullov and A. Ivanov. 7. The birth of critical realism - works of P. Fedotov. 8. Martime painting: I. Ayvazovsky. Romantic tendencies in Aivazovsky seascapes. 9.
