ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The problem of phonetics and phonology is of the three aspects of characteristics of sounds: acoustic, articulatory and functional. The detailed discussion concerns among others the following issues: the structure and the mechanism of the human speech apparatus, articulatory classification of the Russian sounds, alterations of sounds, reduction of vowels, the syllable, accent and intonation in the Russian language, phoneme. In addition, students learn the principles of phonetic and phonological transcription. In the course of the classes devoted to lexicology and lexicography such issues are discussed as e.g.: the semantic structure of a word, the methods of describing the meaning of a word, the notion of a synonym, homonym, antonym, hypernym as well as the issues of phraseology and the typology of linguistic dictionaries.

The topic matter includes the following issues:

1) the concept of the modern Russian literary language;

- the object of phonetics as a scientific discipline; phonetic units;

2) the acoustic aspect of sound description;

3) the structure of the organs of speech and their use in producing speech sounds by the speaker;

4) the articulatory aspect of sound description: the vocalic system and the consonantal system;

5) the principles of phonetic transcription;

6) the accent; the syllable;

7) the contemporary and historic exchange of sounds;

8) phonology as a scientific discipline; phoneme as the basic phonological language unit in the point of view of the Moscow and Leningrad (Petersburg) phonological school; phoneme vs. sound;

9) sequence of phonemes, strong and weak positions of phonemes, the principles of phonological transcription;

10) lexicology and lexicography as a linguistic disciplines; the word as the basic language unit; the semantic structure of a word; the methods of describing the lexical meanings;

11) the notions of: synonym, homonym, antonym, paronym; phraseology and its units

12) the typology of linguistic dictionaries; the Russian language dictionaries.

Learning outcomes:

After having completed the studying process the student:

KNOWLEDGE:

- knows the relation of phonetics and phonology as well as lexicology and lexicography to other linguistic disciplines,

- knows the structure and mechanism of the human speech aparatus,

- knows the definitions and the characteristics of phonetic units,

- knows the phonetic alphabet,

- knows the principles of phonological schools and their differences,

- knows the most important types of the Russian language dictionaries, their titles and authors.

SKILLS:

- is able to name the articulatory characteristics of the Russian sounds and recognizes the sounds on the basis of their articulatory characteristics,

- classifies the Russian sounds on the basis of their acoustic and articulatory characteristics,

- is able transcribe texts,

- applies knowledge of sound coarticulation when transcribing phonetically,

- is able to point the differences between the sound, phoneme and letter,

- is able to use various types of dictionaries depending on the needs,

- is able to explain the reasons for using a given type of dictionary depending on the circumstances,

- is able to explain the meaning of the phraseological expression and apply it correctly in a context,

- is able to find a synonym or antonym for a given lexeme and point out the differences between close in meaning words.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

- is responsible for his individual preparation for the classes

- is deeply conscious of the level of his knowledge and skills in the scope of the Russian language phonetics and phonology as well as is able to complete and develop it.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

During the classes student has to write phonetic transcription of a text and to prepare the presentation about the dictionaries of Russian language. Final exam in a written form includes open questions and multiple choice questions.

Marks and points:

3,0 – 50%-59% points

3,5 – 60%-69% points

4,0 – 70%-79% points

4,5 – 80%-89% points

5,0 – 90%-99% points

5! – 100% points and the activity during classes.

Total number of hours that a student must devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

- classes - 30 h (1 ECTS);

- preparation for the classes and for the presentation - 25-30 h (ECTS);

- preparation for the tests and exam – 25-30 h. (1 ECTS)

TOTAL: 80-90 h (3 ECTS)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
