  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The scope of activities includes a genealogy of Slavic Languages, issues of Proto-Slavic, Old Russian and Russian phonetics, morphology and syntax.

Full description:

The aim of the lectures and classes is to present the inevitable knowledge to pass the course. The topic matter includes the following issues:

1. Periodization of the history of Russian language and other Slavic languages. Work of Cyril and Methodius. Alphabets. Old Church Slavonic language in regard to other Slavic and to proto-Slavic language. The role Old Church Slavonic and Church Slavonic in the history of the Russian literary language.

2. Characteristics of phonetic system in early Slavic communities (1500 BC-second century BC) split of sonants into groups *ur, *ir, *ul, *il. Law intransition *s in *ch (x). Palatalization I. Effect of the language on the preceding consonant. Changes in the vocalic system.

3. Characteristics of phonetic processes of Proto-Slavic language in late Slavic communities (second century BC-VI century AD): open syllables law and its consequences; push the boundaries of syllables and simplification of consonant groups, development of groups *tl, *dl forSlavic terrains, monophthongization of diphthongs, Palatalizations II and changes in groups *kvoi-, *gvoi-; formation of nasal vowels: the rise of new sonants; Palatalization III, transformation of groups *tort, *tolt, *tert, *telt. Loss of intervocal *j, assimiltion and shrinking of the vowels. Transformation of *tj, *dj. The change in the onset in words beginning with a vowel. Loss sonants.

4. The disintegration of Slavic language community - the formation of a three language groups (VI-IX / X century). Characteristics of yers in Old Russian language. Disappearance of yers and repercussion of this process.

5. The disintegration of Old East Slavic language community. Characteristics of phonetics processes of Old Russian and Russian language.

6. Noun, Adjective, Pronoun, Numeral - general characteristics, types of declention.

7. Verb - general characteristics, the meaning of each tenses; topics of the verb; division of conjugations, present tense, imperative, aorist, imperfect, participles, Futura, the Perfect; plusquamperfectum; conditionalis; supinum.

8. Syntax: dativus absolutus; dativus cum infinitivo; accusativus cum infinitivo.

The aim of the classes is to broaden the knowledge for the lecture, enable practical application, encourage the students to participation and working systematically. The Old Russian text is the object of phonetic and grammatical analysis.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course student:

KNOWLEDGE

- Knows the genealogy of languages in Europe, particulary Slavic Languages;

- Has ordered a detailed knowledge of the history of Russian language;

- Knows and understands the basic principles of linguistic analysis of the Old East Slavonic texts on the phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic level.

SKILLS

- Reconstructs the state of the Proto-Slavic phonetics and compares phonetic phenomena of Russian language with the relevant phenomena in Old Church Slavonic and Polish;

- Is able to read, understand and translate Old Church Slavonic and Old East Slavonic texts in terms of language;

- - Can make a periodization of the history of Russian language.

SOCIAL SKILLS

- Is able to interact and work in a group;

- Is aware of the need to respect different views and attitudes.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

During the classes student has to write 5 tests (50 points). Final exam (50 points) in a written form includes open questions, multiple choice questions and the analysis to the Old Russian text. Total number of points is 100.

Marks and points:

3,0 (dst) – 50-59 points

3,5 (dst+) – 60-69 points

4,0 (db) – 70-79 points

4,5 (db+) – 80-89 points

5,0 (bdb) – 90-100 points

5! (bdb+) – 95-100 points and the activity during classes (e.g. presentation).

Total number of hours that a student must devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

- lecturers and classes - 60 h (2 ECTS)

- preparation for the classes + preparation for the tests– 35-40 h (1,5 ECTS)

- preparation for the exam – 15 h (0,5 ECTS)

TOTAL: 110-115 h (4 ECTS)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
