Basics of translation studies

The aim of the course is to present the history of translation, linguistic and intercultural theories of translation, principal types of translation (written translation-interpreting-machine translation), classification of texts for translation purposes and the specificity of the translator's profession and the translation process, taking into account the most common translation techniques and strategies.

The course will discuss issues related to the translator's profession (sworn translator, specialist language, terminologist, lexicographer, etc.), problems that arise during translation (problems with the original text, language problems). Practical exercises within the framework of the classes will concern, inter alia, error analysis, working with text, working with parallel texts, text conventions, typical phrases / syntactic structures in a given type of text.

If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools such as Zoom, Google Meet and others recommended by the University

Knowledge:

– knows basic terminology in translation studies;

– has knowledge of the stages of the development of translation studies as academic field from the historical perspective;

– knows the main theoretical issues of translation studies;

– has an organized knowledge of translation strategies and techniques;

– knows the translator's work environment, competences and roles;

Skills:

– is able to recognize and interpret translation problems;

– is able to analyze and interpret the source text

– cis able to use research tools in translation;

– is able to use and properly apply (general and detailed) translation strategies and techniques;

– is able to search, analyze, evaluate and select information in the field of translation in mother tongue and foreign languages using the latest information and communication technologies;

Social competences:

– understands the need to improve the translator's skills throughout his/her life;

– correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related to the profession of translator and interpreter;

– is ready to maintain the ethos of the translator's profession and observing and developing the translator's professional ethics;

The final grade consists of:

1. grades from two papers – the first one in the field of theoretical knowledge concerns one or more related issues in the field of translation – 40%; the second in the field of the translator's workshop is practical (translation and translation commentary) – 40%;

2. activity during classes – 20%;

Grading scale for written work:

99%-100% – 5!

98%-91% – 5

90%-86% – 4,5

85%-76% – 4

75%-71% – 3,5

70%-60% – 3

below – 2 (nzal)

Student workload:

participation in the seminar = 30h (1 ECTS)

reading the indicated literature: 15 x 1h = 15h (0,5 ECTS)

preparation for two written assignments: 15h (0,5 ECTS)

Total: about 60h (2 ECTS)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence. Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
