ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The main didactic goal of the lecture is to acquaint students with the recent history of Russia and to present them the basic information about political and economic system of Russian Federation, the geography and demographics of Russia and selected Russia's domestic and foreign policy challenges. The course also includes the basic knowledge of the contemporary Russian culture.

1. History of political, economic and social changes in Russia since 1985.

2. Political system of Russia. Political movements and political parties of the Russian Federation.

3. Economy of Russia. Economic modernization and diversification in Russia. Strategic sectors of Russia's economy. Industry of Russian Federation. Industrial regions in Russia.

4. Geography of Russia. Administrative-territorial structure of Russia, time zones in Russia, climate of Russia. Largest cities in Russian Federation.

5. Multinational and multi-faith character of Russia. Human migration in Russia. Separatist movements in Russia

6. Foreign relations of Russia. Russian policy in former Soviet Republics.

7. Demographic and social challenges facing contemporary Russia.

8. Corruption in Russia. Corruption of the Russia's political elite.

9. Human rights in Russia. Civil and political rights in Russia.

10. Media of Russia. Freedom of speech in Russia.

11. Basic knowledge of the Russian mindset.

12. Russian holidays, customs and traditions.

13. Contemporary Russian culture (literature, theatre, cinema, music, fine arts).

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

– the student has a basic knowledge of the recent history of Russia (since 1985),

− the student has a basic knowledge of contemporary Russian society (ethnic and religious variety) and demographic processes,

− the student has knowledge of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation,

− the student has knowledge of main demographic and social challenges facing the Russian Federation,

– the student has a basic knowledge of Russian mindset,

− the student knows the main Russian holidays, customs and traditions;

− the student has a basic knowledge of contemporary Russian culture.

Skills:

− the student describes the political, economic and social changes in Russia since 1985,

− the student is able to characterize the specificity of the Russian political and economic system,

− the student names the main ethnic groups of the Russian Federation,

− the student characterizes the foreign policy of the Russian Federation and explains, what are the main goals of Russian foreign policy,

– the student names the main demographic and social challenges facing the Russian Federation and explains the reasons of Russia's problems,

– the student names and characterizes the most important features of the Russian mindset,

– the student names the most important achievements of the contemporary Russian culture.

Social competences:

− the student is aware of the need to increase knowledge through scientific publications, popular science and the media;

− the student is aware of the need for 'Lifelong learning' and develops his knowledge,

− the student is able to express his or her thoughts accurately and coherently.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.

The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
