ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The proseminar's goal is a preparation by a student his/her bachelor-degree thesis in the area of Russian literature, learning how to write academic papers and summaries, how to quary bibliographical data (library, internet) and to prepare a bibliography.

Full description:

I. Basic issues. History of writing.

II. The literary scholar in the library.

1. Libraries in Poland and Russia. Types of library catalogs.

2. An electronic libraries – resources, methods of use. The credibility of online sources.

III. The literary bibliography.

1. Bibliography – the concept, the basic terminology. Types of bibliography; branches of bibliography; bibliographies of journals.

2. Bibliographic standarts. Cataloguing various library materials. A difference between the Polish and Russian bibliography methods.

IV. The main stages of the literary thesis.

1. Overview of trends and aspects of literary research.

2. Literary dictionaries and encyclopedias.

3. Discussion of the problem of choosing the thesis topic.

4. How to create a work plan.

5. The rules for creating a bibliography.

6. Types of storyboards.

7. The structure of the dissertation. Table of contents. Footnotes – their functions and types. References. Tables and figures. Attachments. Indexes – functions, methods of preparation (tradicional and with help of computer software). Keywords and summary (in Polish and Russian).

8. Rules in writing – quoting and citing sources – a reminder of the basic copyrigh principles; ethical issues in writing and publishing.

V. Characteristics of the scientific text in Polish and Russian.

1. Academic writing style among other funnctional styles.

2. Rules for transcription and transliteration of the Cyrillic alphabet.

3. Detailed rules for the development of: a) master thesis subjects (main text structures, quotations, charts, and tables, references, footnotes), b) additional materials and supplementary information (dedication, motto, introduction, abstract, bibliographical references, table of contents, paginations).

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

- the student has knowledge about major libraries,

- the student knows the basic sources of bibliographic information,

- the student knows Polish and Russian bibliographical standarts,

- the student knows and understands the basic principles of literary research,

- the student has a basic knowledge about how to create personal development path.

Skills:

- the student is able to find the necessary science publications in resources available at the library,

- the student is able to use different sources of bibliographical references,

- the student has basic skills in thesis proofreading and editing,

- the student has the basic skills in thesis in the field of literary study analysis and interpretation of scientific text,

- the student is able to find scientific information using a variety of sources,

- the student has the ability to prepare a science paper which is written in a clear and concise style, its paragraphs are coherent, and its ideas are well organized,

- the student is able to assess the value and usefullness of various scientific text and sources for the the chosen research topic.

Social competence:

- the student is able to effctively prioritize and plan their research work,

- the student is aware of the need to comply with the rules of someone else's scientific achievements,

- the student is aware of responsibility for the preservation of cultural heritage of Poland and Russia.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

1. 40% - continuous assesment: current preparations for classes, which consists of independent preparation of:

a. bibliography on a given topic,

b. summary in Russian on the basis of scientific article.

2. 60% - preparation of a term paper in the form of the presentation, which should include the following elements:

a. a specific topic of a literary study nature,

b. formulated purpose of the conduted conciderations,

c. a specific and appropriately selected research method,

d. a sample of research material.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
