Short description:

The aim of the seminar is to write a descriptive-analytical B.A. thesis devoted to Russian literary and cultural works of 20th century, deepen the knowledge of the science of literature and culture, in particular literary criticism, devoted to literary phenomena addressed in the B.A. thesis.

Full description:

The aim of the seminar is to write a descriptive-analytical B.A. thesis devoted to Russian literary and cultural works of 20th century, which is achieved by means of introducing the students to works devoted to principal research methods, interpretative-analytical works devoted to prominent literary and cultural works of the period. During classes students get to know the principles of writing a B.A. thesis as well as the principles of the use of other authors' intellectual property; they learn to make cross-references, references lists and write summaries in Polish and Russian. After final formulation of their B.A. theses subjects, students present fragments of their works, which are consecutively discussed during classes. Making the students aware of social-political context of the period in question and its influence on historic-literary and cultural processes is one of the essential elements of the seminar.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the seminar, students:

- know the phenomena, trends and currents representative of this period in literature and culture, both in the country and on emigration;

- know the hierarchy of literary and cultural values of the discussed period and understand the causes of the ongoing transformations;

- know various methods of research upon literary and cultural phenomena;

- know basic principles of writing a B.A./M.A. thesis;

- can characterize the historic-literary process and the phenomena in literature and culture representative of the discussed period as well as define their social, cultural and political context;

[social competences]

- are aware of the achievements of Russian literature and culture of this period and their significance for the development of the world literature and culture.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

- verification of preparation for classes

- class participation

- papers/presentations that verify the skill of presentation of the works read individually

Total number of hours that a student must devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

(plan of B.A. thesis – 30%; working in the library – 30%; preparation for seminar and consultations – 40%).

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
