Students learn about a variety of issues relating to the Russian media discourse, mainly to the specificity of the language in contemporary mass media. As part of the media texts, the following issues will be analyzed: specific vocabulary and phraseology, grammatical issues and, in general, communication problems according to pragmatic

Full description:

Students learn about a variety of issues related to the Russian contemporary media discourse especially to the specifics of language. The main objective of the course will be an analysis of press releases for language usage (specific vocabulary and phraseology, grammar issues) and, in general, the problems of communication in terms of pragmatic. The wording of the media discourse shows more and more colloquialisms and approximates to the spoken language. In the light of the above, will be emphasized, among others freedom of communication, explicitness, expressiveness and aggressiveness of language.

Linguistic analysis of the media texts is designed to identify and explore these language mechanisms which affect the consciousness of the reader.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

– the student has knowledge of the diversity of media in Russia;

– the student has knowledge about the role of language in the self-presentation;

– the student knows the functions of language and the elements of communication;

– the student knows and describes mechanisms of verbal aggression, persuasion and manipulation.

Skills:

– the student recognizes the different functions of language in media texts,

– the student recognizes and describes the different styles of Russian language used in media texts,

– the student recognizes and describes the linguistic manifestations of aggression,

– the student is able to distinguish the basic mechanisms of manipulation used in the media,

– the student is able to analyze the language layer selected media text,

– the student uses the tools offered by modern linguistics to analyze media texts.

Social competence:

– the student understands the need for lifelong learning, has a deeper awareness of the level of their knowledge of the Russian contemporary media texts,

– the student is able to work in a group,

– the student is able to independently acquire knowledge and broaden research skills and take autonomous action to develop their abilities.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

seminar = 30 hours

independent preparation for each class: 15 x 1 hour = 15 hours

independent reading: 50 hours

compilation the plan, bibliography and one chapter of the BA thesis – 80 hours

TOTAL: about 175 hours

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.
