Prerequisites (description):

Required credit for classes from the linguistic module: descriptive grammar of Russian, introduction to linguistics.

Students, having received credit for subjects from the linguistic module as above, are familiar with linguistic terminology, are able to perform linguistic analyses, systematize linguistic materials and facts and excerpt data from source materials.


Short description:

Subject to be chosen by students interested in language culture. Required minimum: credit received for descriptive grammar of Russian . Classes are devoted to phraseological issues in Russian. Status of research on phraseology in Russian and Polish linguistics is presented. Students also receive information about European research. Problems related to definition of phraseological terms, determination of borders of phraseologisms, provenance of phraseological compounds and problems related to translation of phraseologisms to other languages or with selection of proper equivalents are discussed.

Full description:

Classes in the form of seminary addressed to students interested in language culture. The thematic cycle encompasses issues related to Russian and Polish phraseological theories. The status of research on Polish and Russian phraseology is presented, along with a series of changes which took place as a result of new research methodologies. Phraseological theories in Polish and Russian are discussed. A series of classifications for phraseologisms are presented, including problems of durability and varying nature of phraseological compounds, problems of variance of such compounds and the issue of innovation within the scope of phraseologisms. Subsequently, compositions from the point of view of their provenance are discussed, e.g. Biblical compounds, ancient compounds and others. The issue of international phraseology is mentioned as the heritage of Mediterranean culture. Within the scope of classes, the issue of the so-called winged words is also discussed and units partially phraseologised. Subsequently, the issue of paronymy and disputable issues related to inclusion of paronyms in phraseology will be mentioned. Furthermore, issues related to transalatability or untransalatability of phrases are discussed. Attempts at determining inter-language equivalents are made. Issues related to understanding phraseology as a determinant of language specific are discussed. The issue of untranslatability of idioms is mentioned. The assumption of the syllabus is to present paronymic resources in Polish and Russian as linguistically integral units. Comparison of proverbs requires discussion on the following issues: paronym structure, paronym as a cultural determinant, proverbs and stereotypes, translation problems within the range of Polish and Russian paronyms, registers, lists and dictionaries of proverbs in Polish and Russian.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE:

After completing the course, the student increases his language competences, has knowledge about contemporary phraseology and paragon theory, extends the stock of Russian and Polish idioms, as well as a resource of Russian and Polish paronyms.

SKILLS:

Student is able to analyze phraseological assemblies, can transform a structure and apply it in context, can determine the provenance of a phraseological relationship, can apply the appropriate paronym and build it into context.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

The student is aware of the acquired skills and the need to expand knowledge.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The course is completed with a test with a grade.

The basis for passing is the result of the final test, the presence and activity of students in the classroom.

The final test is calculated at 20 points. Includes 10 points Ratings: 10 - 12 points - sufficien (3), 13 - 15 points - sufficient plus (3+), 16 - 17 points - good(4), 18 points good plus (4+), 19 - 20 points - very good. (5).

T The cycle of monographic lectures ends with a test. The number of hours that should be devoted to obtaining the optimum effects of learning: organized hours – 30, independent work of the student – 30 hours. Preper to test - 30 hours/ In total, 90 hours.- 3 ECTS

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
