Full description:

Theories and methods of linguistic research I are classes designed for students interested in development trends within contemporary linguistics. Students should be prepared to improve linguistic knowledge. The subject is devoted to the problems of development of linguistic directions in the 20th and 21st centuries. Key directions in contemporary linguistics will be presented, as well as the most important linguistic theories and the most famous their creators. The first classes will be devoted to the repetition of linguistic notions, the basic research methods applied in linguistics, such as the deductive method, inductive method, hypothetical and deductive method, will be specified. Divisions and separate types of research in linguistics will be discussed, as well as a division into general and specific linguistics. The main subject of the classes will be devoted to structural linguistics. A feature of structural research is the detection of abstraction, the separation of what in the language system can be fixed and what is alternating. Above all, these are synchronous studies of language structures, understood as a system of related categories. Contemporary linguistic theories in certain situations remain isolated concepts, and in others they give rise to linguistic schools. Classes are review and theory and schools. "Theories and methods ..." include contemporary theories and the cycle of classes begins with the precursory Kazan school, whose creators are J. N. Baudouin de Courtenay and Mikołaj Kruszewski. The assumptions of the school will be discussed, as well as the phonological theory that laid the foundations of contemporary phonology. In turn, the theory of Ferdinand de Saussure will be presented as the basis and stimulation of modern structural and synchronous research. Next, the theories of the Prague School will be discussed, whose members were scientists from many countries, the fruit of their cooperation were theories from many fields from phonetics and phonology to grammar and functional stylistics. The works of Jakobson, Trubiecki, Mathesius and others will be taken into account. We will also devote a lot of attention to structural American schools. From initial research, conducted under the influence of behaviorism, through the theory of Sapir and Whorf, then the Bloomfield school, the so-called neobloomfields, to Chomsky's generative-transformational theories and stratification theories.
