ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The aim of the classes is mastering translation of texts and moulding basic translational skills typical for written translation of texts of various profiles (e.g. publicistic texts on a realistic and cultural, and social and political subject.), as well as specialised texts.

Full description:

Classes are devoted to the learning of written translation of texts with a defined profile. Students make translations of specialised and quasi-specialised texts, of various length (e.g. press articles, scientific texts for the general public, combining specialised and colloquial language).

Teaching content:

– deepening the knowledge about translation strategies,

– analysis of existing translations from a given discipline,

– appropriate selection of dictionaries, sources, as well as similar and parallel texts,

– preparation of glossaries in a given discipline,

– editing the translated text,

– problems related to freedom of compensation and paraphrase in specialised texts, borrowings, collocations and native terms;

Learning activities:

– mastering specialised terminology and its nuances,

– analyses of translations,

– in-class translation,

– analysis of translations prepared independently by students,

– preparing glossaries,

– self-correction exercises

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

– has an in-depth knowledge of translational analysis of an original text,

- is familiar with purposeful and efficient usage of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, professional lexicons,

– has knowledge of purposeful and efficient usage of the Internet sources,

– knows specialised vocabulary, sufficient for correct translation of texts from a given discipline, and is able to use it,

– correctly qualifies text types and selects adequate translation methods

Skills:

– is familiar with purposeful and efficient usage from bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, professional lexicons and resources,

– can find correct equivalents self-dependently in the time of going from the original text to translation,

– can analyze and interpret an original text deeply,

– can use basic translational techniques – antonymic translation, generalization /concretization, amplification, functional analogue, lexical, syntactical and categorical synonyms,

– can use pragmatic knowledge actively, improve cultural knowledge,

– correctly translates specialised and non-specialised texts from a given discipline in an understandable and clear manner,

– possesses the skill of self-correction;

Social competence:

– understands the need of mastering theoretical basis of the language,

– understands the need of mastering theoretical basis of the theory of translation,

– sees the importance of understanding culture, tradition, realities of another country,

– understands social aspects of practical usage of acquired knowledge and skills, and responsibility which is connected with it,

– understands the need of improving professional and personal competences,

– can co-operate and work in a team,

– understands the need of studying during the whole life.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

1. Continuous assessment (current preparation for classes which consists of preparing translations and glossaries) – 50%;

2. Final written exam (translation of about 3/4 pages – texts which is the basis of the MA thesis) with a translation commentary – 50%;

Final grade 5!: current preparation for all classes and marks 5,0 of exam.

Student workload:

seminar = 30 hours (1 ECTS)

independent preparation for each class: 15 x 2 hours = 30 hours (1 ECTS)

TOTAL about 60 hours (2 ECTS)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Practical placement:

No professional training within the subject.
