Knowledge of the essential grammar and basic linguistic terminology.

The aim of the course is to improve and extend the students’ prior knowledge of the contemporary Russian language as well as to equal the level of knowledge of the individual students that have come to the second-cycle studies from different centres and fields of study.

Range of topics:

1. The principles of language development. The influence of socio-cultural factors on the form of a language.

2. The lexical varieties of a language: native/borrowed and stylistically marked/neutral vocabulary.

3. Borrowings: the reasons behind and their types (loan words proper, translation loans, semantic loans, word coins) and their level of assimilation.

4. Main trends in the development of Russian’s lexical resources. Notions of neologism, occasional words, barbarism, exotism, ethnographism.

5. The Latin alphabet in Russian writings. Mixed Latin-Russian expressions.

6. The groups of vocabulary that undergo a rapid change.

7. The fields of research of linguistic phenomena. Linguistics in comparison to other sciences. A survey of linguistics-related disciplines.

8. The contemporary scientific paradigms. Structuralism and cognitivism.

9. A language system – a norm – an usage.

10. The hierarchical language structure. Language subsystems: phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactical. The units of a language and the units of a text.

11. The specificity of Russian phones. New phonetic phenomena. Variants of pronunciation.

12. Orthographical variants. Divergence between dictionaries. The problem with the letter ë [jo].

13. The essential terminology in the synchronic word formation.

14. The active word formation particles. Trends in contemporary Russian word formation (univerbation, suffixation, prefixation, shortening, compounding, acronyms).

15. Slots and paradigms in word formation.

4. Knows and understands the rules concerning the analysis of Russian texts on various levels of the linguistic description.

SKILLS

1. Knows the relation between the theoretical linguistic devices and specific linguistic phenomena.

2. Identifies and properly interprets (with the use of linguistic terminology) various phenomena in contemporary Russian and is able to compare them to those that take place in the Polish language.

3. Knows how to find the linguistically reliable sources that confirm the lingual form and the meaning of neologisms.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES::

1. Understands that there is a need for constant attention to linguistic changes and to keep his or her linguistic knowledge up-to-date.

2. Accepts and understands the need for language to constantly adapt to the changing world.

3. Has a rationalist attitude towards the linguistic changes.

independent preparation for each class: 15 x 1 hour = 15 hours

preparation for the exam: 15 hours

TOTAL: about 60 hours

1. Continuous assessment (current preparation for classes and activity) – 20%

2. Tests and quizzes on the Kampus platform (max points the maximum number of points for each test is 10 points) – 20%

3. Test. Questions: 32. Max points: 160 (32x5) – 60%

Points and marks:

3,0 (dst) – from 81 to 96 points

3,5 (dst+) – from 97 to 112 points

4,0 (db) – from 113 to 128 points

4,5 (db+) – from 129 to 144 points

5,0 (bdb) – from 145 to 160 points

Final grade 5! (bdb+): current preparation for all classes and marks 5,0 of test.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
