ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The main didactic goal of the lecture is to acquaint students with the political and economic system of Russian Federation, Russia's domestic and foreign policy challenges and selected problems of ideological evolution in post-Soviet Russia.

1. The political system of the Russian Federation. The constitutional competence of the president, the parliament and the government.

2. Political parties of the Russian Federation. The evolution of the Russian party system.

3. Economy of Russia. Russia's dependence on resources. Economic modernization and diversification in Russia. The role of the state in economic development in Russia. Tax policy in the Russian Federation.

4. Multinational and multireligious society in the Russian Federation. Separatist movements in Russia. Ethno-religious conflicts in Russia.

5. The process of elite-formation in Russia. Corruption of the Russia's political elite.

6. Media of Russia. Human rights in Russia. Russia's civil society and NGOs.

7. The political consciousness of the Russian society. Russian political culture. The Russian mindset and democracy.

8. Russia in search of a new ideology. Liberalism versus conservatism in contemporary Russia.

9. Nationalism and xenophobia in contemporary Russia.

10. Foreign relations of Russia. NATO, the European Union and the United States. Russian policy in former Soviet Republics.

11. Contemporary Russian political thought. The geopolitical concept of Eurasia. Sovereign democracy. The Russian imperial idea.

Knowledge:

– the student has well-organized knowledge of the political system of the Russian Federation and the economy of Russia;

− the student knows the most important political parties of the Russian Federation and their political platforms;

– the student has knowledge of separatist movements and ethno-religious conflicts in Russia;

– the student has knowledge about Russian democracy under Putin;

– the student knows, how the political consciousness and mindset of the Russian society is connected with the crisis of Russian democracy;

– the student knows the main trends of contemporary Russian political and geopolitical thought;

– the student has detailed knowledge of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation;

– the student has knowledge about the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in contemporary Russia;

– the student has knowledge about historical memory and politics of memory in Russia.

Skills:

– the student prepares an extensive speech and written statement of the political system of the Russian Federation and the economy of Russia;

– the student names the political parties of the Russian Federation and characterizes their political platforms;

– the student names the main Russia's domestic and foreign policy challenges, explains the reasons of Russia's problems; he explains, how the Russian government attempts to reduce these problems;

– the student prepares an extensive speech and written statement of the Russian democracy under Putin and explains, how the political consciousness and mindset of the Russian society is connected with the crisis of Russian democracy;

– the student characterizes the main trends of contemporary Russian political and geopolitical thought

– the student characterizes the foreign policy of the Russian Federation and explains, what are the main goals of Russian foreign policy;

– the student explains, what are the main goals of politics of memory in Russia;

– the student explains, what is the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in contemporary Russia.

Social competences:

− the student is aware of the need to increase knowledge through scientific publications, popular science and the media;

− the student is aware of the need for 'Lifelong learning' and develops his knowledge,

− the student is able to express his or her thoughts accurately and coherently.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
