ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Command of Russian and familiarity with important facts in the 20th century history of Russia

Short description:

Presentation of the latest achievements of Russian culture in literature, cinematography, plastic arts and popular music at the turn of and in the 21st century.

1. Russian literature of the late 20th and 21st century:

1.1. Has Russian Post-Modernism used up its possibilities? Evolution of the works of V. Sorokin and V. Pelevin.

1.2. New realists in the new century (V. Makanin, Z. Prilepin).

1.3. Women Prose Writers.

1.4. Russian drama – from N. Kolada to I. Viripaev (centres, schools, representatives).

1.5. Poetry of the 21st century.

2. “Mass” (popular) literature – a literary or social phenomenon? Genres, issues, representatives.

3. Plastic arts of the late 20th and early 21st century.

4. Russian cinematography – changes, experiments, representatives.

5. Contemporary Russian popular music.

- has expanded his/her knowledge about the latest Russian literature, current internal processes, its representatives and directions in their literary explorations

- is familiar with and understands the essence of Russian “mass” literature

- is familiar with the newest Russian art, its trends and representatives

- is familiar with the latest achievements of Russian cinematography

- is familiar with the latest trends in Russian pop music

- defines trends in contemporary Russian literature, names their representatives and works

- provides interpretations of selected works of contemporary Russian writers against a broader socio-cultural context

- provides an explanation for the phenomenon of Russian “mass” literature, defines its directions and names its representatives

- defines the role of e-space in the development of Russian culture

- describes exploratory directions in plastic arts in contemporary Russia

- characterises changes and directions of development in contemporary Russian cinematography

- names and defines phenomena related to contemporary popular music

- produces extended written texts about contemporary Russian culture

- finds, selects, analyses and evaluates information about contemporary Russian culture

- has enhanced insight into his/her knowledge about Russian culture, understands the need to expand his/her knowledge using a variety of information media

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Number of questions – 10;

maximum number of points – 40;

3,0 – points score: 28-23;

3,5 – points scored: 33-29;

4,0 – 34;

4,5 – points scored: 35-31;

5,0 – 40-36;

5! – the student should demonstrate extracurricular knowledge of contemporary Russian culture)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
