ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

-Knowledge and skills in the field of Introduction to Literary Criticism, History of Russian and World Literature.

Short description:

The course is aimed: to systematize students’ knowledge and skills in the field of literary theory and methodology of literary studies, allowing critical analysis of modern interpretive strategies and choosing one's own; to expand knowledge about the connections of literary criticism with other humanities; to present major literary theories of the 20th and 21st centuries.

I. Introduction. Literature as a phenomenon of culture.

II. A literary work / text of a literary work and its functions

III. Literary theory as a discipline. The methodology of literary criticism.

IV. Philosophical foundations of a literary theory.

V. The concepts of a literary work.

VI. A literary work: analysis, interpretation, evaluation

VII. Author of a literary work and its recipients in contemporary literary criticism.

VIII. Genre theory (Genology): literary genres, the problem of satire.

IX. Aristotle’s Poetics and literary theory in antiquity.

X. Poetics and literary theory, types of poetics (historical, theoretical, descriptive)

XI. Aesthetics of classicism and baroque poetics; romantic literary criticism. Transformation of approaches in literary criticism in the twentieth centure.

XII. Literature and history: literature in history and history in literature.

XIII. Concepts of history of literature

XIV. Myth - archetype - symbol. Topos theory.

XV. Conclusions

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

− a student knows about the development of literary theory and its European contexts;

− a student knows the most important literary theorists, their texts and ideas;

− a student knows literary terms;

Skills:

− student knows main periods of the development of literary criticism

− a student is able to name the most important theorists, present their positions and analyse the issues raised by them;

− a student compares selected research approaches and various concepts of a literary work;

− student is able to critically evaluate and use the terms of modern literary criticisms;

Social competences:

− a student is aware of the achievements of literary theorists and their contribution to the development of literary theory;

− a student feels the need to develop their own interests in literary theory.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

1 ECTS (30 godz.) - konwersatorium

2 ECTS (60 godz.) - student's own work (preparation for the test)

Work in classes (25%), semester work (25%), final test (50%)

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
