Belarusian literature in Poland

obligatory courses

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the work of Belarusian writers in Poland associated in Literary Association "Bialowieza". Particular emphasis is placed on the role of Belarusian language press in shaping the Belarusian literary movement in Poland.

During the semester lasting lecture there are discussed the issues related to Belarusian literature formed in Poland, and there is characterized the work of individual writers. They are:

Artymovich Nadeya - a poet of loneliness, supporter of modernist tendencies and opponent of forms of traditional poetry;

Bayena Yezhy - founder of the third poetic way, bard of his native land, who bows low to Bilowieza's nature;

Borovik Irena - poet of literature centre, illustrator of manifestations of social and national life of Belarusians in Poland, Podlasie, in love with nature;

Barski Ales (Barshchevski Alexander) - poet, novelist, translator, literary scholar and folklorist, the main topics of interest in poetry is the reality of the homeland, wonder of nature, love, and judgment of renegatism and national nihilism;

Barshchevskii Basili - chronicler of the country, which with great passion refers to the folklore and criticizes all forms of assimilation due to the migration processes from the countryside to the city;

Bursh Yasha (Aniserovich Yan) - opponent of traditional Belarussian poetry and enthusiast of poetic innovation;

Celushetski Yan - poet and novelist, describes the reality of Belarus in the vicinity of the Bialowieza Forest;

Chykvin Yan - poet, novelist and literary scholar and the author of numerous poems dedicated to love and native land;

Dvorakovski Vladyslav - faithful son of the Belarusian village, the author of short stories depicting the rural realitiesafter World War II;

Hayduk Mikolay - pet, novelist and folklorist, author of historical stories, a collector and publisher of the Belarusian fairy tales, legends and songs;

Hayduk Vlodimezh - the main themes of this poet's works are: attachment to the homeland and love for his mother;

Heniusz Yezhy - writer of unfulfilled dreams and possibilities, the author of poems, short stories, essays , journalistic articles and dramatic works;

Yanovich Sokrat - the most versatile artists of Belarusian writers in Poland - a poet, novelist, playwrighter, journalist, became famous as the author of literature miniatures translated into English;

Lobathz Mikolay - writer of unused literary capacity, folklorist;

Luksha Mira - poet, novelist and journalist, a great expert in the Polish Belarussian soul;

Onishevska Helena - poet, novelist and translator of Polish literature into Belarusian language, occupies a transitional position between modernists and traditionalists;

Onishchuk Valentina - poet of missed opportunities, which poetry is characterized by doubt and wandering;

Pavluchuk Basili - writer and researcher of the Polish-Belarusian conflict in the postwar period;

Pavluchuk Vlodimiezh - novelist, journalist and researcher of history of Polish-Belarusian border area;

Romanchuk Simon - writer of profound faith, the Orthodox Bishop of Lodz, author of a number of stories on religious and moral themes;

Rudchyk Victor - writer illustrating the social and national events on the Belarusian-Polish-Ukrainian border;

Sachko Sophia - a poet deeply rooted in the Belarusian village reality manifest in accordance with the manners of modern Polish poetry;

Sklubovski Vintsenty - novelist, repatriate from Vilnius, the author of a series of stories based on events from the practice of judges;

Swisiok Ales (Batura Aleksandr) - poet and novelist, repatriate from Belarus, described the issue of children and young people, introduced to his work autobiographical elements;

Shatylovich Dymitr - traditionalist poet, devoted to his native land, he described his own participation in the fight against Wermacht as a soldier in the Red Army;

Shved Victor - the most prolific poet among Bialowieza Association members, the author of numerous poems for children, a traditionalist;

Volkovytski Yerzy - Belarusian activist, a longtime editor of the weekly Belarusians gazette in Poladn - "Niva", journalist and poet, also created under the pseudonym Yurka Zubrycki;

Zastawin S. (Moyseyuk Leon) - writer, a great scholar of national and social reality which dominants in his Little Motherland - Bialowieza.

After completing the course, student:

1. KNOWLEDGE:

main theories of literary and language studies and linguistics-based research methodologies

basic trends in Belarusian studies

the role of Belarus in the modern world and its influence on the development of Belarusian literature and the Belarusian language

writers and poets of particular works of Belarusian literature, especially the ones written after the 80s of the 20th century

characteristics of Belarusian tradition in connection with methods of analysing and interpreting literary works

characteristics of Belarusian literature or the Belarusian language in connection with other languages or literature of other countries

identify the role of specific historical events for the development of Belarusian literature and the Belarusian language in the context of European history

2. SKILLS:

analyse literary works, using a variety of sources and methods as well as interpret their meaning

prepare comparative literary or linguistic analyses on his or her own, using relevant methods and research tools

recognise the most significant literary works of Belarusian, especially the ones written after the nineteen eighties and prepare critical analyses and interpretations

assess the role of the legacy of particular authors of Belarusian literature against the historical and literary background

use a broader terminology of literary studies in the process of analysing literary works

use research methods of various theoretical models while interpreting a literary work

present theories of researchers of Belarusian literature and the Belarusian language as well as draw conclusions about the development of the language and literature and present synthetic overviews

individually gain knowledge and broaden his or her research skills as well as increase competencies for the professional career

provide relevant interpretations of the Belarusian idea of national independence and its influence on Belarusian social life

3. SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

take active part in initiatives undertaken to preserve cultural heritage, including the heritage of Belarus

take regular part in cultural life, including the cultural life of Belarus, using various media and its forms
