History of Ukrainian literature up to the XVIII century

obligatory courses

During the course, selected works of literature of Kievan Rus, works of the period of the division into districts (13th-15th centuries), polemic literature from the second half of the 16th-18th centuries will be discussed. Participants will also learn about the literature of the Cossack wars and works of the Ukrainian Baroque.

Students are required to know the basics of ancient Ukrainian literature and the history of Ukraine from the earliest times to the end of the 18th century, to use theoretical and literary terms, and to be able to interpret a literary text.

Classroom

Classes devoted to Old Ukrainian literature are aimed at presenting the continuity of the development process of literature in the 11th-18th centuries, with particular emphasis on its originality, richness of issues, topics, and formal proposals, starting with the Christianization of Kievan Rus, changes caused by the influence of the Renaissance, and the writings of the Baroque era, culminating in Hryhora's works Skoworody.

The classes concern issues related to the Christianization of Rus; Greek-Byzantine religious and cultural influences on the development and character of writings in Kievan Rus; works from the period of the division breakdown - the 13th - 15th centuries are discussed. The literature of the Cossack wars period and works of the Baroque period are also analyzed, with an indication of their thematic and genre diversity.

The course lectures on Old Ukrainian literature are intended to present the continuity of the development process of this writing, starting with the Christianization of Rus and the civilization, religious and cultural influences of the Greco-Byzantine Empire, through the "golden period" of the development of Kievan Rus' literature and culture, continuing to a limited extent in the Duchy of Halych Wołyński to the changes caused by the influence of the Renaissance and EU polemics, and finally to the writings of the Baroque era, which is crowned with the works of Hryhorij Skoworoda.

If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be conducted using remote communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Estimated, total number of hours that the student must spend on achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

Conditions for admission to the subject:

- systematic preparation of the assigned material for classes and participation in classes (control of the current preparation) - 50%

- completion of a term paper - 50%

Term work requirements:

1. The author should formulate a research problem, that is, make a thesis that he will try to verify (prove or disprove) in the work.

2. Before starting to write a thesis, its plan and the list of literature should be consulted with the teacher.

3. The paper should be 5-8 pages of standard text, ie the size should not be less than 10,000 characters with spaces and greater than 15,000 characters with spaces (including footnotes). The work should contain a list of the used bibliography (the volume of the list of the used bibliography is not included in the above-mentioned volume of the essay, however).

4. The structure of the work should include: introduction, development, ending, bibliography. The introduction should contain: thesis (formulation of the research problem), objectives of the work, justification for the choice of topic, description of the subject and subject literature. Develop a proper analysis of the texts. The ending should include conclusions resulting from the research.

5. Each page of the work must be provided with bibliographic, source or reference notes.

6. The text of the work should be edited in accordance with the following rules: - font: Times New Roman Normal, size 12, - foreign language phrases in italics, - line spacing: 1.5 lines, - standard margins (top, bottom, left and right: 2.5 cm), - title of the article: Times New Roman Normal font, size 14, bold.

7. Footnotes should be placed in the text as footnotes, font Times New Roman Normal, size 10, line spacing: 1 line. A footnote is treated like a sentence, so it should start with a capital letter and end with a period. In the extension, the number of the footnote is placed without a space after the word, before the comma. At the end of the sentence, the footnote number is placed before the full stop at the end of the sentence. Notation of footnotes and bibliography according to SUV standard.

The condition for admission to pass the course / exam is attendance (in accordance with the Study Regulations at the University of Warsaw). The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides whether to acknowledge the absence.

The form of crediting the classes in which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.

Exceeding excused and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course.

Completion of the subject - the exam is in the form of a written test (5 closed questions and 5 open questions on the knowledge of reading). The evaluation criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds:

60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory)

69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)

78% - 86% - 4 (good)

87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus)

96% - 98% - 5 (very good)

99% -100% - 5! (Very good rating with an exclamation mark)

The following criteria are used for credits:

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all important aspects - 5.0 (very good)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all important aspects with a small number of errors or inaccuracies - 4.5 (good plus)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, omitting some (less important) aspects - 4.0 (good)

- achieving the assumed learning outcomes with the omission of some important aspects and with significant inaccuracies - 3.5 (satisfactory plus)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes with the omission of important aspects or with serious inaccuracies - 3.0 (satisfactory plus)

- failure to achieve the assumed learning outcomes - 2.0 (unsatisfactory)

The conditions for the retake examination are the same as for the credit test for the main term.
