Students should be interested in the political, economic and religious history of Ukraine.

Short description:

The subject of the lessons is the history of Ukraine in the 9th- 20th centuries. With a special emphasis on political, social, religious and economic processes. The subject represents the history of Ukraine from antiquity to the of the disintegration UdSSR, with a special focus on political, ethnic, military and religious issues. Much attention is paid to the development of state processes (the Slavic states, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). The influence of other countries on the development of Ukrainian lands is discussed. It also analyzes the historical development of the Ukrainian people and the process of the formation of this nation, its national consciousness and statehood.

Full description:

1. Ethnogenesis of Ukrainians. The first East Slavic rulers in the lands of Ukraine (IX-X century). Kievan Rus during the reigns of Vladimir the Great and Jarosław the Wise. The breakdown of the district. The Mongol invasion and its effects.

2. Ruthenia Halicko-Wołyńska. Ukrainian lands in the composition of the Polish Crown (14th-16th centuries). The lands of Ukraine in the composition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (14th-16th centuries). Polish-Lithuanian Unions and Ukraine.

3. Religious situation in the territory of Ukraine in the 14th-17th centuries. Cossack wars. Partitions of the Republic of Poland. Ukraine in the Habsburg Empire.

4. The lands of Ukraine in the nineteenth century (part of the Russian Empire and Austria).

5. The birth of the Ukrainian national movement. The first Ukrainian organizations and parties.

6. Ukraine during the First World War. Socio-political and economic situation.

7. Proclamation and functioning of the Ukrainian People's Republic (1918-1921). Proclamation and functioning of the West Ukrainian People's Republic of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

8. Soviet Ukraine in 1921—1939.

9. Ukrainian minority in the Second Polish Republic. Ukraine in 1939-1941.

10. Ukraine under German occupation. Collaboration and resistance.

11. Polish-Ukrainian relations during the Second World War.

12. Ukrainian SSR in 1945-1953.

13. Soviet Ukraine in 1953-1985. Dissident movement in Ukraine.

14. "Perestroika" and the national revival (1985-1991).

15. Ukraine gaining independence.

The teacher reserves the right to make certain changes in the curriculum.

If it is not possible to conduct classes on university premises, classes

shall be held with the aid of distance learning tools, most likely Google

Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

After finishing the lecture student understands the process of Ukraine's history from modern period until the period of partitions of the First Polish Republic. Aquires factual knowledge at more advanced level than in high school. Is able to get to the literature of the subject and also use related fields of history at elementary level which is essential in philological works.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Exam requires knowledge of the facts, the ability to understand historical processes and the ability of independent thinking. The exam covers the most important events in the history of Ukraine. I propose to describe a few selected questions.

Short description:

The main objective of the course is to familiarize students with historical processes and events taking place in the Ukrainian lands in the period from the 10th century to the present day, as well as to familiarize students with the basic concepts of the history of Ukraine.

Full description:

During the classes, great emphasis will be placed on the development of statehood and Ukrainian national identity in the light of previous historiographical interpretations (Ukrainian, Polish, Russian). Another important aspect will be the issue of cultural, religious and civilizational influences on Ukrainian lands (East-West).
