ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Practical classes during which students become familiar with the culture and specificity of the Ukrainian language in the business sphere. They will learn specialised vocabulary concerning economic and commercial contacts and economic, commercial, banking terminology as well as the organisation and functioning of companies and enterprises (language level C1 according to CEFR).

Full description:

The material covers economic and commercial vocabulary, language analysis of selected documents, commercial terminology with elements of bank, stock exchange and insurance market activities. It introduces the latest concepts of economics, economy, and trade; it records and discusses current trends in the development of Ukrainian business language used in professional practice.

During the classes students will become acquainted with the culture and specificity of the language in the business sphere, expand their specialist vocabulary concerning economic and commercial contacts with Ukrainian partners; enrich the already learnt terminology of economic, commercial, banking, marketing and advertising language on selected texts and specialist literature.

The course prepares students for independent work in understanding, compiling and translating content-differentiated texts from the commercial sector. For the purposes of the course, students compile dictionaries of specialised terms on their own. The scope and content of the course may be used as a basis for research in translation and lexicography.

The student's workload:

class hours – 30 hours

preparation for classes – 15 hours

preparation for getting a credit – 15 hours

total: 60 hours (2 ECTS)

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, the student:

1. will know:

- the state and directions of development of the modern Ukrainian language at an advanced level (K1_W06);

- the spoken and written Ukrainian language in accordance with the requirements specified for level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K1_W09);

2. will be able to:

- search, critically analyse and evaluate, select and use information on the Ukrainian language (K1_U01);

- communicate orally and in writing in Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements specified for level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K1_U09);

3. will be ready to:

- critically evaluate his/her knowledge and received content (K1_K01);

- to think and act in an entrepreneurial way (K1_K02).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Requirements for completing the course:

- attendance

- preparation for lessons

- doing homework

The final mark is:

- 10% continuous assessment (active participation, preparation for lessons)

- 90% final written test

Assessment criteria (percentage) for the final written test:

96%-100% – 5!

90%-95% – 5

85%-89% – 4+

80%-84% – 4

70%-79% – 3+

60%-69% – 3

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, and each subsequent one requires an explanation to be given. The teacher decides how the student will make up for any other unjustified absences. If the number of absences is equal to or exceeds 50% of the total number of contact hours, it may result in a negative grade for the course.

In the event of failing to pass the course by the last class of the semester, the student must pass the course and get a mark during the initial exam period or the retake exam period.
