Comparative Literary Studies

The student should have the ability to analyse and interpret literary texts.

Classroom

The main objective of the seminar is to familiarise students with the basics of knowledge in the field of comparative literature, the dominant tendencies of its development, with the conceptual and terminological instruments.

The class will discuss the scope and methods of research in literary comparative studies. Detailed issues in the course include, among other things, analysis of selected works of Ukrainian literature of the beginning of the 20th century, including the analysis of texts containing the features of modernism, symbolism, neorealism, neoromanticism, Vitaism (the literature of the Shattered Renaissance). We also interpret the works of Ukrainian emigrants.

The student knows and understands:

K2_W02: in-depth terminology and methodology of literary research

K2_W08: Ukrainian in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements set out for level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The student is able to:

K2_U02: properly select sources and information from them, make a creative interpretation and presentation of information in the field of Ukrainian literature

K2_U06: formulate and test hypotheses related to research in the field of Ukrainian literary studies

K2_U11: independently plan and implement their own lifelong learning

The student is ready to:

K2_K01: critical assessment of knowledge and received content

Requirements for completing the course:

- attendance

- research project, essay (i.e. preparation of a paper)

The final mark is:

- active participation - 50%

- research project, essay (i.e. preparation of a paper) - 50%

Written exam, assessment criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds (points obtained from a written exam)

60% - 68% - 3 (sufficient)

69% - 77% - 3+ (sufficient plus)

78% - 86% - 4 (good grade)

87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus grade)

96% - 98% - 5 (very good)

99% -100% - 5 ! (very good with an exclamation mark)

The following criteria are used for crediting:

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all relevant aspects - 5.0 (very good grade)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all relevant aspects with a small number of errors or inaccuracies - 4.5 (good plus grade)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, omitting some (less important) aspects - 4.0 (good grade)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes with the omission of some significant aspects and with significant inaccuracies - 3.5 (sufficient plus)

- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes omitting important aspects or with serious inaccuracies - 3.0 (sufficient plus)

- failure to achieve the assumed learning outcomes - 2.0 (unsatisfactory grade)

The student has the right to two unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires a justification. The lecturer decides about recognizing the absence.

The form of crediting classes for which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course.

In the event of failing to pass the course by the last class of the semester, the student must pass the course and get a mark during the initial exam period or the retake exam period.
