ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Classes are aimed at developing English language skills (especially communicative competence) at the advanced level (C1). The overall aim is to enhance students' language competences to cover different fields of knowledge, a prelude for students to learn languages for specific purposes. These classes are to constitute the base for translating texts for general and specific purposes.

Full description:

The content of teaching is subordinated to meet students' both cognitive and communicative needs and their intentions related to acquiring qualifications necessary to perform their future profession. The priority is to prepare future graduates to meet the needs of the labor market. The classes cover a set of practical tasks, oriented towards basic communications, which are used for stimulating language acquisition in the field of both vocabulary and grammar.

The aim of the course is to develop the following language competences:

* expressing contents covered in classes in the form of complex and adequate communications, both written and spoken;

* developing speaking skills, the aim of which is to communicate with fluency and spontaneity, which will enable conversations in various social situations, both private and professional;

* expressing opinions, active participation in discussions, presentation of topics from various fields of social life (participating in discussions, debates);

* use of terms and set phrases in conversations;

* translating parts of texts between Polish and English;

* writing works in English, with adequate use of expressions in the scope of selected professional areas.

The knowledge of grammar assumes adequate use of grammatical structures and units of vocabulary at an advanced level (C1).

Student's workload: the numbers of hours that a student should devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the subject include:

organized hours - 30 hours in the classroom, 1 ECTS;

student's work - 15 hours of current preparation for the classes, 0.5 ECTS;

15 hours of exam preparation (0.5 ECTS)

Learning outcomes:

K2_W09 The graduate knows and understands the spoken and written English language in accordance with the requirements specified for the C1 + level of the European System for the Description of Languages.

K2_U10 The graduate is able to communicate in speech and writing in English in accordance with the requirements specified for the C1 + level of the European System for the Description of Languages.

K2_K01 The graduate is ready to critically evaluate his knowledge and received content

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Conditions for passing the course and grading components:

- presence during classes;

- passing control tests;

- group and individual presentations

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires a justification. The lecturer decides whether to acknowledge the absence. The form of crediting the classes in which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer. Exceeding excused and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course.

The course ends with a graded test taken in the last or last but one class in the semester. There is also a mid-term test which is used for offering students feedback on their progress.

Evaluation criteria are express as percentages:

60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory)

69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)

78% - 85% - 4 (good)

86% - 94% - 4+ (good plus)

95% - 98% - 5 (very good)

99% -100% - 5! (Very good rating with an exclamation mark)

The student enjoys the right to take the final test in the same form on a different day, either in the main session or in the resit session, on condition that they have passed all obligatory tests.
