Short description: |
The purpose of the course is to acquire basic translation skills as regards the written translation of general texts from Polish into Russian at B2/C1 level according to CEFR. The course involves practising a preliminary analysis and interpretation of general texts before translating them using a range of translation techniques and strategies. |

Classes focus on translating general texts from Polish into Russian. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with a range of translation techniques and strategies that create the toolbox of the translator. During the course the student will become familiar with the various stages of translation, learn how to make a preliminary analysis and interpretation of a text and will gain the ability to access, analyse, evaluate and select from a variety of sources of information necessary to complete the translation. The classes cover the issues of proper names, transcription, the pragmatics of translation, and verifying translated texts. In addition, the student will become familiar with various issues concerning the ethics of being a translator. The student's workload: class hours – 30 hours preparation for classes – 15 hours preparation for getting a credit – 15 hours total: 60 hours (2 ECTS) |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course, the student: - will have a systematic detailed knowledge, covering theories regarding translation studies as well as translation techniques (K2_W05) - will speak and understand the Russian language, both written and spoken, at B2/C1 level according to CEFR (K2_W11) - will be able to plan and organise his/her own life-long learning (K2_U11) - will be able to communicate regarding specialist topics via different communication techniques and methods, in Polish and Russian (K2_U13) - will be able to communicate both in writing and speaking at B2/C1 level according to CEFR (K2_U14) |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Requirements for completing the course: - attendance - preparation for lessons - test on transcription - written translation at home - final written translation in class The final mark is: - 50% continuous assessment (preparation for lessons, written translation at home, and test) - 50% written final translation in class Assessment criteria (percentage): 96%-100% – 5! 90%-95% – 5 85%-89% – 4+ 80%-84% – 4 70%-79% – 3+ 60%-69% – 3 Criteria for assessing translation: a/ closeness of translation to original b/ completeness of translation c/ linguistic correctness (vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation) d/ stylistic correctness e/ formatting The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, and each subsequent one requires an explanation to be given. The teacher decides how the student will make up for any other unjustified absences. If the number of absences is equal to or exceeds 50% of the total number of contact hours, it may result in a negative grade for the course. In the event of failing to pass the course by the last class of the semester, the student must pass the course and get a mark during the initial exam period or the retake exam period. |
