The course covers the principles of preparing and editing a master's thesis and monitoring the implementation of research. The main aim of the classes is to familiarize students with the most important theoretical problems of contemporary Ukrainian studies.

The master's seminar is designed to prepare students for writing their master's theses. Basic assumptions and requirements of the thesis (technical and content-related) are discussed. During the course, students acquire the knowledge necessary for independent topic selection and thesis writing. The following issues will be discussed: the essence of library searches, the principles of creating footnotes and references, different ways of using sources, ways to introduce citations, basic rules for creating thematic outlines, principles of using digital technologies. The phases and timetable of preparing, elaborating and writing a thesis, practical aspects of master's theses, ways of avoiding mistakes, most common in student theses, etc. will be analysed.

The core areas of literary and linguistic studies will also be presented in class, depending on the needs of the group.

Mastering the knowledge of the subject and writing a thesis is the basis for obtaining the Master's degree in Ukrainian philology.

Student workload

30 hours in the classroom - 1 ECTS

10 hours preparation for classes and 20 hours - for credit (submission of the thesis chapter) - 1 ECTS.

A total of 60 hours (2 ECTS)

If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be held using distance communication tools recommended by the University of Warsaw (Zoom, Google Classroom).

A student finishing the course:

1. knowledge:

- knows and understands in depth the terminology and methodology of linguistic research and literary studies

- in-depth knowledge of the relationships of philological research and their complex dependencies on other scientific disciplines

- has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the psychological basis of language functioning

- knows and understands the Ukrainian language in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements of C2 ESOKJ level

- knows and understands the basic concepts and principles of intellectual property protection of copyright

2. skills:

- be able to correctly select sources and information from them, perform critical analysis, creative interpretation and presentation of information in the Ukrainian language, literature and kulture

- is able to apply appropriate research methods and tools in the field of Ukrainian linguistics and literary studies

- can formulate and test hypotheses related to research in the field of Ukrainian linguistics and literary studies

3. social competence

- is ready to critically assess your knowledge and content

- is ready to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner and to initiate actions for the public interest or the social environment

Course requirements:

- attendance and preparation for classes, i.e. presentation of the successive stages of the thesis (literature study, collection of illustrative data, etc.)

- presentation of one's own progress in writing the thesis in the form of a speech, presentation and discussion of parts of the thesis; possible presentations at conferences (e.g. student conferences).

A student is entitled to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent absence requires the submission of an excuse. The lecturer decides whether to recognise an absence.

The form of credit for classes in which the student has been absent - making up on duty.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences in 50% of classes may be the basis for failing a course.

Obtaining credit in the second term in the basic session and the re-sit session, according to the r.a. schedule.
