The course comprises issues pertaining to the development and functioning of a language which is one of the most important elements of culture.

The course is aimed at presenting issues related to functioning and development of a language considered the essential element of culture, introducing it not only as a tool of communication, cognition and the interpreter of the world, but also as an instrument influencing people and forming the reality.

The thematic scope:

1. Linguistics as a scientific discipline. The place of language among other signs’ systems.

2. The beginning of language research – ancient India, Greece and Rome.

3. The selected concepts of language – The Neogrammarians, Prague linguistic circle, structuralism, Generative grammar and cognitivism.

4. Language as a system of signs. The concept of a sign. The classification of signs: natural and conventional Signs.

5. Terminology – the role and features of terms. The principles of correct creation of scientific and professional signs. The phenomenon of strengthening the cognitive capacity of literary language and colloquial speech.

6. The functions of a language in social life. What is language culture. Language codes.

7. Lingual image of the world. Phraseology.

8. The Ethics of language: linguistic manipulation. The concept of linguistic anthropology.

9. The idea of political correctness in the language, gender categories.

10. The role of context – language in communication. The language of mass media. Language borrowings.

11. The languages in contacts.

Student workload includes:

As regards specialty learning outcomes, after the course:

1) one has knowledge in the field of the history of linguistic research, the selected concepts of a language; can describe interactions of linguistics with other scientific fields; has basic knowledge of main topics of contemporary linguistics research. (S1_W01, reference to the major-related learning outcomes: K1_W03, K1_W04);

2) one knows basic linguistic terminology; is aware of the character of linguistics as a field of humanities. (S1_W02, reference to the major-related learning outcomes: K1_W01, K1_W03, K1_W04);

3) one can characterize the subject, aims and methods of the main fields of linguistic studies; indicate the basic types of research methods and describe their main features; correctly use the main concepts of linguistics (S1_U02, reference to the major-related learning outcome: K1_U04, K1_U06);

4) one develops the ability to use different types of dictionaries and other sources; can formulate and express his/her own opinions (S1_U03, reference to the major-related learning outcome: K1_U02, K1_U03);

5) one can use his/her knowledge of language in different situations in professional and everyday life (S1_U08, reference to the major-related learning outcome: K1_U06, K1_U07, K1_U08);

6) one is aware of the responsibility for a language as a cultural heritage (both with regards to the national language and all other languages) and shows interest in language as an instrument of social communication (S1_K01, Evaluation methods and assessment criteria: K1_K05);

7) one understands the need for lifelong learning and broadening the acquired knowledge (S1_K04, reference to the major-related learning outcome: K1_K01, K1_K02).

To get a credit students have to attend the classes according to the Faculty’s Statute.

Classes are conducted in the form of discussion on requested readings or other material delivered by the lecturer in form of presentation.

Group work.

Individual work with the tutor.

The final mark comprises the following elements:

Active and substantive participation in the class (70%).

Presentation of the topic fixed by the lecturer (30%).

Grading system:

99 – 100% - 5 (excellent)

93 - 98% - 5 (very good)

87 - 92% - 4,5 (fairly good)

77 - 86% - 4 (good)

71 - 76% - 3,5 (satisfactory plus)

60 - 70% - 3 (satisfactory)
