Elective course: Translation workshops

Classroom

The aim of this course is to develop the proficiency in English with special regard to translation competence.

The emphasis is placed on correct understanding of social, political and cultural texts in foreign language and their relevant translation into Polish.

The right selection of topics will enable the participants of workshops to become acquainted with typical, the most widespread language phenomena which occurs in English texts. This will also help to develop the translation practice which might be necessary for everybody who declares good knowledge of foreign language. Careful attention to the quality of translation fosters also mastering the host language (In this case – Polish). During the workshops the participants will practice also the translation into foreign language.

Translation of the following language phenomena and constructions in English texts:

1. Infinitive constructions;

2. The Passive Voice;

3. Gerund and Gerundial Constructions;

4. Participles;

5. Modal verbs;

6. The Subjunctive Mood;

7. Nominative absolute constructions;

8. Causative constructions;

9. Emphatic structures;

10. Elliptical constructions;

11. Negative sentences;

12. Set expressions – phrasemes;

13. Names and proper names in translated texts;

14. Newspaper headlines.

15. Typical mistakes in translation from Polish into English.

Translation of texts from Polish into English.

Student workload includes:

Classroom participation – 30 hours (1 ECTS)

Preparing for classes – 30 hours (1 ECTS)

Provided by the teacher during the course.

As regards specialty learning outcomes, after the course:

1) one has knowledge of basic translation techniques used in broadly understood humanities; can make the initial preparation for the translation process of literary works (K2_W09; reference to P7S_WG The range and depth, P7S_WK Context/conditions, effects);

2) one knows basic translation principles, including those arising from copyrights (K2_W08; reference to P7S_WG The range and depth, P7S_WK Context/conditions, effects);

3) one uses electronic sources of information consciously and critically; handles particular language phenomena, typical for English texts; has translation habits which might be useful in future work; translates texts of medium difficulty into host language (K2_U07; reference to P7S_UW exploiting knowledge / problems resolved and tasks performed);

4) one has English language proficiency at level B2 (K2_U09; reference to P7S_UK communication / receiving and creating utterances, dissemination of knowledge in the scientific community and foreign language use)

5) one is aware of the significance of professional approach to the translating profession, reflection on ethics and respecting professional ethic rules (K2_K03; reference to P7S_KO)

6) one understands the need for lifelong learning and broadening the acquired knowledge (K2_K01; reference to P7S_KK)

To get a credit students have to attend the classes according to the Faculty’s Statute.

A student shall have the right for two unexcused absences; each subsequent absence requires the explanation. The lecturer is responsible for its recognition. The exceeding amount of excused and unexcused absences for 50% can be the basis for non-completion of the course.

If the amount of absences rises above the permitted number, a student shall request the lecturer to provide for a time and a way to get credit for the course.

The unexcused absences during the classes within the prescribed time result in losing the first credit deadline. A student has the right to make up absences and to get credit during the repeat term.

Active participation in the class, making homework, translating selected texts.

Credit mark is based on the attendance, active participation in the class, homework and translation of selected passages of texts.

The final mark comprises the following elements:

Active and substantive participation in the class (50%).

Three test works in the semester: two translation from English into Polish and one from Polish into English (50%).

Grading system:

99 – 100% - 5 (excellent)

93 - 98% - 5 (very good)

87 - 92% - 4,5 (fairly good)

77 - 86% - 4 (good)

71 - 76% - 3,5 (satisfactory plus)

60 - 70% - 3 (satisfactory)
