Short description:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the construction and functioning of digital libraries, archives, repositories and their aggregates, with particular emphasis on websites from Central and Eastern Europe.

Full description:

The classes are aimed at students who want to learn about the possibilities of digital libraries, archives, repositories and their aggregates. During the course, students will learn about the structure and operation of archiving and digital heritage websites. Problems related to the use of sources available on the Internet will also be discussed.

The course covers the following issues:

1. Introductory classes. The idea of ​​open access.

2. Using digital collections. Public Domain and Creative Common Licenses.

3. File formats used in archiving. Personalization of settings in programs and browsers.

4. Digital libraries: concepts and construction.

5. Digital libraries of Germany and Austria.

6. Digital libraries of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

7. Digital libraries of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania, Gold Collection of Eurasia.

8. Library aggregates: Federation of Digital Libraries, Europeana, World Digital Library.

9. State digital archives: concept and construction.

10. Digital archives in Poland.

11. Digital archives abroad.

12. Social digital archives.

13. Digital museums in Poland.

14. Digital museums abroad.

15. Digital repositories.

The student develops his research skills, learns to independently acquire knowledge, using the support of a research tutor.

Student workload:

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The condition for admission to pass the subject is compulsory attendance during classes in accordance with the Detailed Study Rules at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (Resolution No. 114 of the LS Faculty Council of 19/12/2017)

A student has the right to be absent 2 times in one semester, consisting of 30 class hours (thirty 2-hour classes). At the beginning of the course the teacher will instruct students on how to make up for the absence and complete what they have missed. The student's time table overlaps do not excuse over limit absences.

Classes will be conducted in the form of a discussion on the subject of reading or material presented by the lecturer in the form of a presentation. Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.

Students prepare presentations on the subject given by the teacher. The schedule of presentations will be set by the teacher during the first or second classes. Persons absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher.

Completion will cover knowledge of the material discussed during the semester and will include one random question from the material discussed in class and one of the chosen reading. The final evaluation consists of:

Active and substantive participation in classes (25%).

A presentation on a subject designated by the teacher (50%).

Oral exam (25%).
