The goal of the course is to familiarise students with the history of countries of Spanish language area; to present it from the perspective of shaping separate cultures on the basis of cultural heritage of the Iberian Peninsula. The course also discusses the influence of the historic events and processes on shaping the national culture of Spain and other countries of Spanish language area.

The course presents an overview of selected events and aspects of the history of countries of Spanish language area. It covers the following range of topics:

1. The Roman conquest and romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula.

2. The Muslim conquest: Christian Spain vs. Arabic civilisation.

3. The Reconquest: the development of Christian kingdoms, the discovery of St. Jacob's grave, and the establishment of pilgrimage routes.

4. Mesoamerican civilizations in the face of the Spanish conquest.

5. The Inca Empire at the beginning of the 16th century.

6. 1492: the first voyage of Christopher Columbus, and the "encounter of the two worlds" as a beginning of an intensive exchange of goods, national treasures and concepts between America and Europe.

7.1492: the Battle of Granada and the banishment of Jews; the events that begin the reflection on Spanish multiculturality.

8. The evangelisation of the indigenous people of America in the colonial period as a source of religious syncretism.

9. The House of Habsburg on the Spanish throne: the Iberian Peninsula as the centre of the world's empire.

10. A colonial society: Gachupines, Creols, Mestizos, Indians and Afro-latino-Americans; building cultural identities in Latin America.

11. The reforms of the Enlightenment and the liberal revolution, growth of the Spanish anticlericalism.

12. Latin American countries vs the imperial politics of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

13. Centralist politics vs regionalisms (Galicia, the Basque country).

14. The Conquest and colonisation in the cultural memory of contemporary Indian societies of Mexico and Peru.

15. Centralist politics vs regionalisms (Catalonia).

K_W03 The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the terminology, methodology, subject, and research trends which are characteristic of Spanish studies.

K_W09 The student has the knowledge and understanding of selected events of history of Spain and Latin America, and important aspects and features of their cultures.

K_W12 The student has the knowledge and understanding of the significance of multiculturality in building the identity of the individual and the society.

K_U01 The student can apply basic theoretical constructs which are characteristic of language and culture studies.

K_U03 The student can recognise, analyse, and interpret various types of Spanish texts; can anchor them in the general historic-cultural context; can conduct their analysis with basic terminology and adequate methods.

K_K05 The student is ready to show respect and care for preserving cultural heritage.

Audiovisual classes. The material is presented in the form of a lecture and discussion. The latter form is based on the reading of selected works, whose goal is to prepare students to analyse and interpret historic and cultural processes of Spain and Latin America.

Course requirements: The condition for passing the course is writing the final exam. Attendance and activity will influence to the final grade. Students who are active in classes will increas their final grade by 0.5. For the other hand the students who will have more than 2 absences, their final grade will be reduced by 0.5.
