  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The course in the general literature from the comparative perspective is designed to put the methodology into practice learned in another course of study, "Introduction to comparative studies".

Short description:

The class is designed to present some generalisations of the development of European literatures, taking into account issues related to the processes of literary history. In the course of the class, each literary epoch and literary trends are discussed from the comparative perspective (including theories, manifestos, determinants, historical background). Special attention is paid to the most outstanding prose works representing these trends.

Full description:

This course looks at literary periods in chronological order and from the comparative perspective. By using examples of important texts of the given period, it discusses the tenets of various trends, and looks at similarities/differences in their manifestation in different national literatures.

Such procedure allows to gain knowledge of the discussed epoch and also trains the skill of comparative reading and interpretation of literature.

By discussing the texts, the course strives to activate the knowledge of comparative theories and methods acquired earlier.

Learning outcomes:

K_W01 The student has the knowledge and understanding of the place and the meaning of literature and literary theories, and their multifaceted connections with humanities.

K_W08 The student has the knowledge and understanding of the multifaceted relations of literature to historic and cultural processes.

K_W13 The student has the knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts and rules of protection of intellectual property and copyright.

K_U02 The student can apply basic research skills in accordance with the scientific code of ethics and copyright law; these skills include identifying and analysing the problem, choosing adequate methodology and research tools, analysing and presenting results, all of which pertain to literary studies.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Written exam (75%), active class-participation (25%)

Regular attendance is important; two absences allowed regardless of the reason.
