Prerequisites (description): | By the end of the second term of the seminar the following course (Level II) should be completed (unless it has already been completed as part of the program in the Institute of English, UW): #2645 Metonymy in Language and Thought. or #2630 The Notional Approach to Grammatical Categories By the end of the second term, the student's knowledge of the field of cognitive linguistics is broad enough so that s/he (i) can decide on the topic of his/her MA thesis that would meet his/her interests and professional plans; (ii) can present a plan/outline of his/her MA thesis. |

The seminar will focus on the following topics: 1) Multimodal metaphors: verbo-gestural and verbo-pictorial realizations (in e.g. advertisments, satirical and editorial cartoons); dynamic activation of metaphoricity; discursive functions of multimodal metaphors. 2) Aspects of gesture analysis After a brief overview of gesture types and roles we shall discuss gesture as a window onto the processes of conceptualization. 3) The concept of TIME in language and thought |

Learning outcomes: |
WIEDZA K_W01 pogłębia wiedzę o miejscu i specyfice filologii angielskiej w kontekście nauk humanistycznych. K_W02 pogłębia wiedzę o kluczowych metodologii i teoriach, oraz poszerza znajomość współczesnych nurtów i kierunków rozwoju badań nad językiem, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kontekstu anglojęzycznego. K_W04 rozwija wiedzę o płaszczyznach i procesach komunikowania się w języku angielskim, zarówno w mowie, jak i w piśmie. K_W07 pogłębia wiedzę o projektowaniu badań filologicznych, a w szczególności o twórczym zastosowaniu metod i narzędzi w formułowaniu problemów badawczych i testowaniu hipotez. K_W11 poznaje pojęcia i zasady z zakresu ochrony własności intelektualnej i prawa autorskiego K_W12 ma świadomość zasad i norm etycznych w nauce. UMIEJĘTNOŚCI K_U01 umie posługiwać się zaawansowaną terminologią z zakresu językoznawstwa i oraz metodologią badań właściwą dla tych dyscyplin w ramach filologii angielskiej. K_U03 umie przedstawić zdobytą wiedzę w sposób logiczny i klarowny w formie pisemnej i ustnej. K_U06 potrafi ocenić przydatność różnych koncepcji teoretycznych do prowadzenia badań filologicznych oraz do zróżnicowanych zastosowań praktycznych. K_U08 potrafi docenić różnorodność opinii zawartych w lekturach oraz przedstawionych w dyskusjach i wykorzystać je jako źródło inspiracji. K_U12 potrafi współdziałać z innymi w ramach pracy zespołowej; ma umiejętności organizacyjne pozwalające na realizację celów; potrafi inicjatywę własną dopasować i twórczo wykorzystać poprzez podejmowanie wiodącej roli w zespołach. K_U13 zna język angielski na poziomie minimum C1 według Europejskiego Systemu Opisu Kształcenia Językowego. KOMPETENCJE SPOŁECZNE K_K02 rozumie rolę kształcenia ustawicznego i ma przekonanie o potrzebie rozwoju osobistego i zawodowego; definiuje kolejne etapy tego rozwoju. K_K04 czuje się odpowiedzialny za pracę własną i szanuje pracę innych. K_K08 docenia użyteczność swojej wiedzy i umiejętności w budowaniu więzi wspólnotowych. K_K10 cechuje się tolerancją wobec inności, odnosi się z szacunkiem do odmiennych zachowań kulturowych, a także do odmiennych poglądów jednostkowych. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Discussion during seminar is based on the reading assignments; work in "subgroups"; students' oral presentations based on selected literature on the subject; written assignment at the end of the term. Up to three absences are allowed. |
