ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 10.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

This seminar offers a wide range of topics, focusing on various aspects of general and historical linguistics, phonology, and sociolinguistics. The discussion will also involve issues related to translation, such as the reception and interpretation of texts in the light of primary sources and editions. The approach adopted in this course involves the formulation and testing of hypotheses, on the one hand, and the collection and analysis of linguistic data, on the other. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to apply different analytical tools and methods to investigate different aspects of language.

Full description:

This seminar offers a wide range of topics, focusing on various aspects of general and historical linguistics, phonology, and sociolinguistics. The discussion will also involve issues related to translation, such as the reception and interpretation of texts in the light of primary sources and editions. The approach adopted in this course involves the formulation and testing of hypotheses, on the one hand, and the collection and analysis of linguistic data, on the other. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to apply different analytical tools and methods to investigate different aspects of language.

The seminar is addressed to students who would like to develop their interests in formal analysis of language structures and language use, the history of English and linguistics, and the interface of the English language and culture. The following list of topics is intended as an invitation to students to carry out their own research and develop their interests in linguistics as part of their master’s thesis.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: the graduate will be able to

K_W01 Identify and characterize on an advanced level the place and status of general and historical linguistics with respect to phonology, sociolinguistics and translation within the humanities

K_W02 Describe on an advanced level the current trends in general and historical linguistic research within English studies

K_W04 Characterize on an advanced level the principles of research design in linguistics, with special focus on the application of methods and tools in formulating research problems and testing hypotheses in general and historical linguistics

K_W05 Identify the notions and principles pertinent to intellectual property and copyright

K_W06 Characterise economic, legal and other factors relevant for various kinds of professional activities related to the study programme

Abilities: the graduate is able to

K_U01 Apply advanced terminology and notions pertinent to the discipline of general and historical linguistics with special consideration to phonology, sociolinguistics and selected aspects of translation studies

K_U02 Apply advanced research methodology within linguistics and English studies, respecting ethical norms and copyright law

K_U03 Apply knowledge obtained during the course of studies to account for and solve a problem, thereby completing a research task related to the discipline linguistics with special consideration of general and historical linguistics

K_U04 Analyze linguistic, phonological, sociolinguistic and translation phenomena and draw generalizations on their basis in the context of societal, historical and economic factors on an advanced level

K_U05 Discern alternative methodological paradigms within the area of general and historical linguistics

K_U06 Find information in various sources and critically assess its usefulness for research related to the topic of the MA project

K_U07 Use modern technology in the process of learning and communicating with academic teachers, colleagues, representatives of various institutions and fellow participants in classes and projects, applying various channels and techniques of communication

K_U09 Present knowledge in a coherent, precise and linguistically correct manner in English on level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, ensuring an appropriate register and form
