Short description:

The aim of the course is to familiarize participants with the issues and techniques of teaching language systems, i.e. grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of English as a foreign language.

Full description:

The course introduces students to the methodology of teaching English as a foreign language to younger students. The aim of the course is in particular to familiarize participants with the issues and techniques of teaching language systems, i.e. grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of English as a foreign language. The course also includes elements of practical mini-lessons, during which students can practice teaching short classroom sequences.

The topics covered in the course are:

1. How to teach younger students (grades 4-8)?

- Strengths and weaknesses of younger students.

- Learning objectives for younger and older children.

2. Introduction to teaching language skills and systems. Planning the lessons

3. Teaching vocabulary (i)

4. Teaching vocabulary (ii)

5. Teaching vocabulary (iii)

6. Micro-learning (illustrated with material from textbooks) "Time to reflect on pedagogical practice - workshops"

7. Teaching pronunciation (i)

8. Teaching Pronunciation (ii)

9. Micro-learning (illustrated with specific textbooks) + "Time for reflection on pedagogical practice - workshops"

10. Teaching grammar (i)

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

Upon course completion, the student knows and understands

- K_W01 in an advanced way the specifics of the methodology of teaching English against the background of applied linguistics and the field of humanities;

- K_W02 in an advanced way the key terminology related to the methodology of teaching a foreign language to children and the main methods of activating visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities in the child and the techniques of teaching language systems (grammar, vocabulary, phonetics) to children;

- K_W03 trends in the development of linguistic research within English philology (especially research applicable to the school classroom).

Skills:

The student will:

- K_U01 use advanced terminology and conceptual apparatus in applied linguistics;

- K_U03 use the knowledge gained to describe and solve a problem and carry out a project on a topic within the discipline of applied linguistics (in particular teaching children), including: selecting and preparing materials and tools needed to teach language systems to children, selecting and using appropriate visual and audiovisual aids;

- K_U05 recognise the differences between alternative methodological approaches used in the discipline (applied linguistics), including modifying textbook material appropriately, writing a lesson plan on a given topic and preparing appropriate materials for the lesson;

- K_U08 participate in project work, interact with others as part of teamwork and lead the work of a team, including preparing and leading a piece of a lesson for children using appropriate techniques and materials;

- K_U09 present acquired knowledge in a coherent, precise and linguistically correct manner, using English at level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, selecting forms of expression appropriately for the communicative situation, and communicate with other, diverse audiences (mediation competence).

Social competences:

The student is ready for

- K_K02 lifelong learning, personal and professional development using the knowledge and skills acquired in the course of studies (including the teaching pathway);

- K_K03 take responsibility for his/her own work and respect the work of others, taking care to observe the principles of professional ethics, developing the ethos of the profession and ethical principles and norms in science in relation to the disciplines represented in the study programme;

- K_K04 critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills in the field of study.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Obtaining a credit for the course is conditioned on the presence and activity in the classes. 2 absences are allowed.

1. Presentation (micro-learning, sequence of 3 exercises). Separate marks for:

• use of English

• prepared materials

• the way of conducting the mini-lesson

3. End-of-term project (a lesson plan with materials)
