Short description:

The course aims to perfect English vocabulary at the C1 level. It

covers the following subject areas: education, science, environment, society, health, law and order. One extra topic is chosen on the basis of students' suggestions. In-class work will involve listening, speaking, reading and writing. A wide range of exercise

techniques will be used - gap filling, defining, matching, translating

fixed phrases, error correction, information gap, negotiating meaning

on the basis of a variety of contexts etc.

etc.

Full description:

There is one topic per two classes. After each topic a mini-test is held. The end-of-semester test covers all the topics. Materials may vary from teacher to teacher but they are always approved by the Practical English coordinator before the beginning of the semester. They may come from handbooks such as Misztal, Mariusz.1995.Tests in English Thematic Vocabulary. Warszawa: WSiP, other books such as Loewen, J. W.2007. Lies My Teacher Told Me. New York: Touchstone or Gladwell, M. 2008. Otliers - The Story of Success. New York: Little, Brown and Company, excerpts from newspapers and magazines such as A Hip-Hop Experiment by

Nicole Bengiveno/The New York Times or Online rants land Facebook and Twitter users in legal trouble (The Sydney Morning Herald) by

Jill Lawless, fragments of fims and other programmes available e.g. on youtube (TED talks, M. McIntyre comedy sketches, War of the Century BBC 2005, George Carlin, etc.)

Learning outcomes:

Students use the 240 vocabulary items successfully in the tests as well as during their class performance.

The student:

K_U05 is able to monitor and diagnose the correctness of the Polish and English languages in use.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The testing techniques used are e.g.: gap filling, defining in English, providing English equivalents and tasks concerning collocations, e.g. matching, true/false selection or error correction.

Assessment: the teacher selects 240 vocabulary items from the materials covered and tests the students on them. There are 6 mini-tests (60 points altogether) and one big test (40 points). Students must collect minimum 60 points in order to pass.

The retake consists in obtaining a positive grade in a written retake test.

Two or three (to be determined by a specific group teacher) formally justified absences are allowed.
