  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The course offers a comprehensive coverage of major areas of English grammar related to the Verb Group and the Noun Group in the Complex sentence. The topics discussed in the course include Tense and Aspect (compositionality of meaning); Passive voice (verb categories, restrictions on formation); Modality (modal verbs, alternative linguistic strategies of expressing modality); word order (inversion, position of adverbs); countability as a context-dependent phenomenon; definiteness and relative clauses.

Full description:

The course covers the following topics:

1. Tense and Aspect: compositionality of meaning.

2. Modality: modal verbs, alternative linguistic strategies of expressing modality.

3. Reported speech and reporting, rules of backshift and their semantic motivation, reporting verbs; reporting in communication: reporting meaning, selection of information, choice of register, reporting from various points of view.

4. Patterns of verb complementation: the use of infinitive, gerund or finite forms in dependent clauses according to the main verb; groups of verbs according to the pattern they take (partly self-study).

5. Passive voice: verb categories, restrictions on formation.

6. Articles and other determiners; countability of nouns as a context-dependent phenomenon; interaction of countability, number and definiteness in the use of articles; generic uses of articles.

7. Relative clauses: rules concerning the use of relative clauses (defining vs non-defining; the choice of pronouns, punctuation). The role of relative clauses in text-building

8. Conditional clauses: revision and extension of the traditional pedagogical classification; the semantics of conditionals: open vs hypothetical conditions, the interaction of the type of condition with tense forms and time reference, conditional conjunctions.

9. Word order: inversion, position of adverbs (partly self-study).

- present knowledge on topics concerning advanced English grammar and communicate it in a cohesive, precise and linguistically correct manner in the English language at level C1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K_U09)

Social competences

Students will be ready to:

- value responsibility for one’s own work and respect the work of others, adhering to the professional and ethical norms used for practical projects on English advanced grammar (K_K03)

Education at language level B2+.

The final test

The retake consists in obtaining a positive grade in a written retake test.

Two or three (to be determined by a specific group teacher) formally justified absences are allowed.
