Short description:

The course devoted to systematizing and extending the students knowledge of selected structures of English grammar which are common sources of learners’ errors and to practicing those in textual contexts. The focus is on raising the awareness of the role of grammar in expressing meaning and in communication.

The course devoted to systematizing and extending the students knowledge of selected structures of English grammar which are common sources of learners’ errors and to practicing those in textual contexts. The focus is on raising the awareness of the role of grammar in expressing meaning and in communication.

The course covers the following topics:

1. Raising grammar-awareness: revision of basic grammatical terminology, error correction exercises – lexical and grammatical errors of various types and their influence on the meaning of texts

2. Articles and other determiners in texts·

Countability of nouns as a context-dependent phenomenon;·

Interaction of countability, number and definiteness in the use of articles·

Generic uses of articles – typical texts·

The use of articles and other determiners in various kinds of texts

3. Relative clauses in texts·

Rules concerning the use of relative clauses (defining vs non-defining; the choice of pronouns, punctuation)·

The role of relative clauses in text-building

4. Patterns of verb complementation: the use of infinitive, gerund or finite forms in dependent clauses according to the main verb·

Groups of verbs according to the pattern they take (partly self-study)·

Semantic differences following from the choice of the gerund or infinitive

5. Reported speech and reporting·

Rules of backshift and their semantic motivation·

Reporting verbs ·

Reporting in communication: reporting meaning, selection of information, choice of register, reporting from various points of view6. Conditional clauses·

Revision and extension of the traditional pedagogical classification·

Learning outcomes:

The student knows the rules of using article and other determiners in texts and can interpret the intended meaning of articles in texts.The student knows the rules of using relative clauses and can apply them in texts.The student understands the differences in meaning following from choosing different patterns of verb complementation and knows the patterns required by basic verbs.The student can apply the rules of backshift in reported speech and report utterances appropriately to the context. The student understands the meaning of verb forms in conditional clauses and can construct conditional sentences of intended meaning.The student can recognize, correct and explain errors in the use of the structures discussed in the course.
