A presentation of James Joyce's oeuvre: we discuss; his short lyrical poems (from "Chamber Music" and Pomes Penyeach" collections), his satirical poem "Gas from a Burner") ; his short stories ("The Dubliners"); "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"; "Ulysses" (chosen chapters), and selected passages of "Finnegans Wake". The texts are read in the context of social and political situation in Ireland at the time, and Joyce's biography. Special attention is paid to his artistic development (especially as far as his narrative skills and recurrent motifs of his prose are concerned) and his readings (H. Ibsen, French and English novelists). Analysing "Ulysses' (the HADES and PENELOPE episodes) we concentrate on Joyce's narrative techniques: interior monologues/ stream of consciousness, the use of free indirect discourse, focalization. Selected passages of "Finnegans Wake" demonstrate Joyce's linguistic inventiveness. |
