Full description:

The MA seminar will focus on the dominant thematic, generic, and ideological trends in British, Irish, and post-colonial/the British Commonwealth literatures. The chronological scope of the seminar encompasses prose, poetry, and drama from the 19th till the 21st century. Of interest are literatures of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone African post-colonial writings. Particularly welcome are theme-focused and genre-focused dissertation topics within selected ideological contexts for reading literature: history/memory/trauma, multiculturalism/ ethnicity/nationalism, feminism/masculinities/gender studies, neorealism/ poststructuralism/postcolonialism, urban studies/ ecocriticism. Equally welcome are topics transcending generic borderlines, be it document/fiction, literature/visual arts (painting, photography, memorials), literature and its cinematic/TV series adaptations, literature and its graphic novel appropriations, traditional poetic forms and the uses of contemporary media for poetry writing, drama conventions versus trans-theatrical modes of representation. The aim of the seminar will be to underscore the need for returns to past literature and their ideological re-evaluations to understand the dominant trends in contemporary literature. Concomitantly, the analysis of contemporary literature from a trans-national, multi-cultural, and trans-generic perspective will be the basis for discussions on the role of literature in shaping our national and cultural identities.
