ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The course has a dual focus: a) in terms of language, the goal of the course is to revise and practice skills and systems needed for writing a research paper and an MA thesis; b) in terms of content, the course deals with reading and writing summaries, abstracts and articles which bear characteristic features (stylistic and/or rhetorical) of the main genre, as well as with the key principles of structure of information.

The course has a dual focus:

A. Language Focus

In terms of language, the goal of the course is to revise and practice the following areas:

A.1. Vocabulary in text (key words within the field of study, academic vocabulary, ways of referring to facts, evidence, data, processes, ways of stating opinions)

A.2. Grammar in text (verb tenses when referring to sources and data, multi-clausal sentences, the use of passive voice, cohesive/linking devices)

A.3. Functions (stating cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, describing processes, procedures)

A.4. Skills (paraphrasing, quoting, summarising academic texts within a given genre, documenting sources of information)

B. Content Focus

In terms of content, the course deals with aspects of language important to understand when analysing and writing about various texts. They will be a selection, depending on participants’ interests.

Acquiring the writing skills mentioned in the course description.

K_W04 understands the nuances of the planes and processes of communication in English, both oral and written;

K_U02 speaks English correctly, accurately and coherently, choosing appropriate forms of expression for the communicative situation;

K_U12 is able to interact with others in the framework of teamwork; has organizational skills to achieve goals; is able to adjust and creatively use own initiative by taking a leading role in teams, is able to enter the space of intercultural dialogue;

K_K07 is able to express himself in a coherent, clear, logical and concrete manner in order to function effectively in dealing with others;

K_K08 appreciates the usefulness of his knowledge and skills in building community ties.
