ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Course addressed to students interested in translation practice and critique, aimed at surveying the research on and the specificity of translations for children.

Short description:

Dedicated to the extramural MA programme

The course presents major lines of research on translating for young audiences. It addresses the changing approaches to translating children literature (several Polish versions of the same text, older and newer translations), the motivation of the translator's choices, translation problems of lexical, stylistic and cultural nature, the strategies applied by translators, the influence of the specific type of the target audience on the translator's work, the issue of adaptation and the translator's creativity. It also practices translation analysis, based on the multi-faceted model of literary translation analysis proposed by M. Adamczyk-Garbowska (1988) and inspires students to apply analystic skills to their own translations of samples from chiltren's texts.

Learning outcomes:

Acquainting students with the major concepts and tendencies in the research of children's literature translation, developing the ability to analyze translated texts according to a systematic model and interpret the translator's choices in the cultural context.

K_W09 has an advanced understanding of the complexity and pluralism of cultures, knows the obvious and non-obvious cultural codes that determine intercultural contacts, knows the structural and institutional conditions of culture, especially in the context of the countries of the English language area;

K_W10 knows to an advanced degree the geographical, historical, political, economic, cultural and social realities of the countries of the English language area;

K_U03 is able to present the acquired knowledge logically and clearly in written and oral form;

K_U05 can effectively select and apply knowledge of the discipline for communication, teaching, research purposes;

K_U09 is able to recognize obvious and secondary cultural symbols, use complex cultural codes when interacting with representatives of the cultures of the countries of the English language area, and generally in intercultural interactions;

K_K02 understands the role of lifelong learning and is convinced of the need for personal and professional development; defines the successive stages of this development;

K_K05 appreciates individual initiative, self-reliance, and recognizes the importance of personal contribution to team activities;

K_K06 recognizes the nature of dilemmas, problems, conflicts, and seeks the best solutions to them. 

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

A written test including a discussion of theoretical issues and an analysis of fragments of translations.

Retake: a written test in the same form

Two absences are allowed.
