Short description:

The seminar includes classes relating to analyzing the selected works of American literature and culture, as well as a close supervision of the process of students’ writing of their consecutive chapters throughout the academic year.

Third semester.

Full description:

The seminar is designer to motivate students to write master theses in English language on the topics regarding American literature and culture. Basically, students will be free to choose and write on any subject they would feel fit for themselves; however, the professor will make suggestions as to what topics could be interesting and revealing, as well as possible for individual students to handle successfully. The length of a singular thesis including the introduction and a full listing of sources should be of some 65 printed double spaced pages.

First ten meetings or so will be devoted to vigorous discussions of the previously assigned literary texts – analyzing, interpreting, noting the nuances of the content as well as the specifics of the written English language. Emphasis will be put on the practice of logical and coherent thinking process, so that students will be exposed and possible engrained in a disciplined system of expressing themselves and of arguing with authority on the issues pertaining to what they decide to write about. After covering the assigned pieces of literature – novels, drama and poetry – the professor will devote ample time (1) to deal with students individually; (2) to assist students in bringing up their intellectual capacities; and (3) to work on improving their command of English. The professor will read at the home the consecutive chapters produced and supplied by students, then bring them back to class for further polishing.

The theses will be reviewed by the professor upon their completion.
