The subject of the course will be to show selected aspects of French history and culture from the Revolution to the Second World War through the transformations of music and musical life. |
Full description: |
During this historical and cultural seminar, selected social and political phenomena from the time of the French Revolution to World War II will be shown through changes in the sphere of music and musical life in France. Issues such as the use of music for propaganda purposes, historical debates and references to one's time in selected operas, nationalism in music (in particular the French-German rivalry), national, religious and gender identity in music will be discussed. |

Learning outcomes: |
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: – characterize selected trends and phenomena in the artistic culture of France in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, – use basic concepts and corresponding terms used to describe culture, – use various sources and methods, including modern information technologies, to search, analyze, evaluate, select and use information necessary to participate in classes. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Classes end with a grade. The following elements will be taken into account when evaluating: – active participation in class (2 absences allowed, participation in the discussion); – evaluation of a multimedia presentation prepared on a topic agreed with the lecturer; – written final work in class at the end of the semester. |
