Short description:

Classes devoted to the knowledge of French culture are aimed at preparing the student for theoretical reflection on culture. The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with the functioning of the basic institutions of the French monarchy and to briefly present the changes that took place during the French Revolution.

classes devoted to the knowledge of French culture are aimed at preparing the student for theoretical reflection on culture. The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with the functioning of the basic institutions of the French monarchy and to analyze the changes that took place during the French Revolution.

On the basis of various studies, and above all source texts, the following will be discussed:

- the meaning of terms such as: Ancien Régime, absolutisme, monarchie absolue

- fundamental rights of the French monarchy

- judiciary exercised by the king (lit de justice et séance royale, les lettres des cachets, la grâce royale, jugement par commissaire)

- sources of law (les lois, les ordonnances, les codes spécialisés, les édits)

- forms of control of the absolute monarchy (les assemblées d`état, les états généraux, les assemblées de notables, les assemblées du clergé, les états provinciaux, les assemblées provinciales, les cours souveraines ou supérieures, le droit d`enregistrement et de montrance)

- forms of royal government (le Conseil du roi)

- royal administration (les gouverneurs, les parlements et les juridictions ordinaires, les administrations et juridictions financieres, les intendants et les subdélégués)

- outbreak of the French Revolution (main events, successive national assemblies)

- the meaning of the three Declarations of the Rights of Man and Citizen (1789, 1791, 1793)

- electoral rights during the French Revolution (basic concepts: citoyen passif, citoyen actif, non-citoyen, types of electoral systems)

- the problem of slavery in the times of the Ancien Régim and the French Revolution

after completing the seminar, the student should be able to:

1. make a list of basic bibliographic items in the scope of the discussed topic

2. present and comment on the source text in French

3. present and comment on a study in the selected field in French

4. take part in a panel discussion on a specific topic concerning French culture, conducted in French

5. prepare and write a few-page text in French summarizing the issues discussed during the seminar

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

crediting the course is based on the assessment, which consists of:

1. writing a final test to check the acquired knowledge

2. oral presentations during classes consisting of:

a. a summary of a fragment of a contemporary study on the discussed topic

b. analysis of a fragment of the source text

3. mandatory attendance
