Short description:

The course introduces basic concepts of phonetics and phonology.

Brazilian group:

The course surveys the description of Brazilian Portuguese consonants and vowels, including the phonemic and allophonic transcription, including regional variants of Brazilian Portuguese.

Full description:

The course of Portuguese phonetics covers the following topics:

1. Types of phonetics (articulatory, acoustic, auditory); sounds and letters; transcription.

2. Principles of transcription.

3. The organs of speech and general classification of sounds.

4. Criteria for the classification of consonants: (manner and place of articulation, voiced - voiceless, oral - nasal); table of Portuguese consonants.

5. Cardinal vowels (primary and secondary); criteria for the classification of vowels; table of Portuguese vowels.

6. Mentalistic definition of the phoneme; types of distribution.

7. Allophones of Portuguese consonants; allophonic transcription.

The lecture focuses on the following aspects:

1. Basic concepts of phonetics and phonology.

2. The difference between phonetics and phonology.

3. Basic concepts of generative phonology.

4. The concept of Universal Grammar.

Grupo brasileiro:

1. Estudo dos sons com função comunicativa: fonologia.

2. Unidades de análise fonológica e estudo dos fonemas.

3. Análise fonêmica, fonação e aparelho fonador.

4. Descrição e representação fonética/ fonológicas/ vogais/ semivogais e consoantes, de acordo com a nomenclatura gramatical brasileira.

5. Encontros vocálicos.

6. Diferenças entre a nasalização e a nasalidade.

7. Estudo dos metaplasmos.

Learning outcomes:

The course aims at teaching the following skills:

- understanding the difference between phonetics and phonology;

- knowledge about basic concepts of phonetics, as well as generative phonology;

- understanding the notion language typology;

- understanding the notion of Universal Grammar.

Brazilian group:

The course aims at teaching the following skills:

- correct transcription of Brazilian Portuguese;

- correct classification of Brazilian Portuguese speech sounds, including regional variants representative of the main regions of Brazil;

- differentiation between a letter and a sound, as well as between a phoneme and an allophone;

- differentiation between types of phonetics.
