  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

The aim of the copurse is to acquant the pasticipants with the history of Spain from the Antiquity till the end of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon. The history of the Iberian Peninsula is presented from the perspective of the people and the societies living there; the course seeks to stress the influence of the historical events and processes on the development of the Spanish national culture. An active participation of the students is required: presentations on particular subjects, discussion over literature, various quizzes and tasks. Not only historical, but also cultural issues will be addressed, and shown in their specific context.

2. Ancient cultures on the Iberian Peninsula: the Iberians, the Celts, Tartessos, the Basques, the Phoenicians, the Cartjaginians.

3. Roman colonization.

4. Gothic tribes invasions. The Visigothic Kingdom.

5. The Muslim conquest. The history and culture of Al-Ándalus.

6. The formation of the earliest Christian communities: Asturias, Castile, Catalonia, Navarre.

7. The fall of the Caliphate of Córdoba; the Almoravid, Almohad and Marinid invasions. The Reconquista.

8. The Kingdom of Castile: political, economic and cultural development.

9. Alfonso X the Wise; Toledo School of Translators.

10. The Kingdom of Aragon: political, economic and cultural development.

Learning outcomes:

Upon graduation the student knows basic terminology, subject and fields of research covering the history of Spain (from the Antiquity to the end of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs); the most important events and processes in the history of Spain and important aspects of Spanish culture of the period in question (K_W03; K_W06).

Upon graduation the student knows how to read and understand texts on spanish history and culture; present their views, opinions, discuss, present prepared issues on Spanish history; identify different types of historical texts, place them in a general historical and cultural context, and analyze them using basic terminology related to historical studies; independently acquire knowledge and develop skills using appropriate sources and scholarly texts on history of Spain (source texts, monographic studies, etc.); write an essay using appropriate methods and appropriate sources of the historical studies;

prepare oral presentations using appropriate methods and sources for the field of history; use basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts specific to the historical studies (K_U01; K_U02; K_U03; K_U04; K_U05; K_U06; K_U07).

Upon graduation the student is capable of critical assessment of their own knowledge and skills and understands the need for continuous improvement and development; planning and organizing work, developing their entrepreneurship, team collaboration and compliance with professional ethics;

active participation in the culture of the studied region using various forms and media and to work both in a team performing various roles and in an autonomous manner; keeping informed about contemporary processes and phenomena occurring in the Spanish culture and historiography (K_K01; K_K02; K_K03; K_K04).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The students have access to short recorded lectures and also lectures that are discussed during class. The classes are dedicated to students' presentations and/or discussions over literature (depending on a particular subject). The end-of-term note derives from a student's activity in the abovementioned fields, attendance and the exam note. The exam checks the knowledge obtained as well from the literature as from the lectures and presentations. To pass the test one should obtain 75%.
