Short description: |
The aim of the copurse is to acquant the pasticipants with the history of Spain from the epoch of the Catholic Monarchs until the 19. century, presenting it from the perspective of the people and the societies living on the Iberian Peninsula and stressing the influence of the historical events and processes on the development of the Spanish national culture. An active participation of the students is required (presentations on particular subjects, discussion over literature, various tasks). Not only historical, but also cultural issues will be addressed, and shown in their specific context. |

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the history of Spain from the end of the Catholic Kings (Isabella and Ferdinand) to the outbreak of the War of Independence with Napoleon, with particular emphasis on the social and cultural processes taking place on the Iberian Peninsula. The course aims is to present the cultural diversity of Spain forom the historical perspective and its importance for the formation of Spanish society. Additionally, it covers the political changes taking place on the Iberian Peninsula in the modern period, when two dynasties ruled in Spain: the Habsburgs and the Bourbons. Particular subjects: 1. Joan of Castile. 2. Charles V - as King of Spain and as Emperor. 3. Philip II - domestic and foreign policy. 4. Philip IV. 5. Philip IV and Olivares. 6. Charles II. 7. Philip V. 8. Ferdinand VI. 9. Charles III. 10. Charles IV 11. Second of May Uprising. Specific matters will be discussed during one or two classes. |

Learning outcomes: |
Upon graduation the student knows K_W01 how to link Hispanic studies with other disciplines of the humanities on a basic level, including the study of culture and religion of Spanish-speaking countries K_W03 basic terminology, subject and fields of research covering selected fields of science and scientific disciplines relevant to Iberian studies; K_W06 the most important events in the history of Spain and Latin America and important aspects of Spanish culture and language; Upon graduation the student knows how to K_U02 present their views, opinions, discuss, present prepared issues in Poish; K_U06 prepare oral presentations in Poish using appropriate methods and sources for the fields of scientific disciplines specific to Hispanic studies; Upon graduation the student is capable of K_K01 critical assessment of their own knowledge and skills and understands the need for continuous improvement and development; K_K02 planning and organizing work, developing their entrepreneurship, team collaboration and compliance with professional ethics; K_K03 active participation in the culture of the studied region using various forms and media and to work both in a team performing various roles and in an autonomous manner |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The end-of-term note derives from a student's activity i(discussion, presentations), attendance (2 unexcused absence) and the oral exam. The oral exam consist of the knowledge obtained during classes as well as from the indicated literature. |
